Cricket Tragic Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Expected decision. In fact, I was surprised he didn't quit after the WC where he walked out even after the medical team cleared him to play. Reports came out then about his retirement. KP does not have the drive that he had as a young chap who moved to a **** part of Nottingham to earn a living. From there to Chelsea, he has achieved more than what he ever imagined. He won't be sticking around for too long in tests either beyond the Ashes in Australia.

His body won't be put under the physical and mental strain of playing too much cricket.. and thus he won't get jaded or burned out. He can make a lot more money playing for 2 months in IPL anyway.. so who cares about piddly ODIs and T20s? Playing test cricket will ensure he is still considered a "real" cricketer. Very smart move Kevin.

KP will be fine either way imo. yea.. i didn't read before that he was still gonna play IPL. nevertheless it is a smart move. at least he got his priorities straight. I have more respect for such players than the ones who are jack of all trades and master of none.

The ECB demands that a player should be available for both ODIs and T20 or he should opt out of both. unless your name is andrew strauss, then you can play only odis like he did last year. one rule for one, and one rule for another. ecb = :facepalm: things between ecb and kp have not been too good for a long time, and i reckon after they fined him for his nick knight comments, this is a bit of a spiteful move on kps behalf. wouldn't be surprised to see ecb have the last laugh if they decide to chuck him out of the test team in next couple of years. one gets the feeling they are a bit more resentful towards him than other eng players because he is so desperate to always go and play ipl.

Andrew Strauss, for example, was not obliged to 'retire' from the ODI side when it became clear that he had no future in T20I cricket. Indeed, in April 2009, when announcing details of Strauss' omission from the World T20 side, Geoff Miller, the national selector, stated: "Andrew and the selectors believe his game is better suited to Test and ODI cricket and it is for that reason he has not been selected in the preliminary 30-man squad for the forthcoming ICC World Twenty20. Andrew is focused on the Test and ODI formats of the game." If that can work for Strauss, why not Pietersen? The likes of Michael Lumb have been selected only for T20I cricket, while Alastair Cook, the ODI captain, and Jonathan Trott are among those not currently in the T20I side. KP wanted to retire from ODI's and continue playing in international T20's. But ECB does not give that option. It was Pietersen's intention to opt out only from the ODI format but, due to the terms of his ECB central contract, his decision to rule himself out of one limited-overs format automatically ruled him out of the other. He has not so much retired from T20Is, as been retired. Tests and T20's are the future.

England's Test season will still coincide with the latter half of the IPL. I am with C_T, KP is maneuvering himself to retire from everything after 2013 Ashes next July. By then he will have the opportunity to play South Africa at home and India away. I probably expect him to announce his pre-planned retirement date before IPL auction to guarantee him a big bid.
