When someone commits suicide i always feel it is a waste of a human life but it is impossible to imagine what is going through someone's mind just before they decide ti take their own life.

True. Suicidal tendencies are not rare. It is rather common. Very few of those with the tendency make an attempt and only very few succeed. The will to survive is a very powerful human emotion and it takes a lot to commit suicide. Somebody just decided that the pain he is undergoing at present is too much and will never go away - that is how suicide happens. Most suicides can be prevented if proper counselling is sought - they usually happen on the spur of the moment of intense pain ( and are usually not well planned in advance), and can be avoided in many cases.

It's a question that no one who has suffered from depression has ever found an answer to, should he continue to be in pain, Sorrow, tears, panic attacks and what not just so people around him don't feel ditched. For how long does one do that, what is the right thing to do ? .

When someone has a serious mental health issue being "selfish" is the last thing they are doing. They feel there is no way out of this misery but this option. It is unfortunate he wasn't able to talk to someone, see a pyschiatrist e.t.c.
