The three leading contenders are obviously Sobers, Miller, and Kallis but plenty of other names in there as well. I would pick Sobers though Miller, Waugh, and Laxman would also be great batsmen to have at this position.
Ultimate_Game Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 There are two approaches to selecting no. 6 and 8 (assuming wk is at no. 7). Either you can go with 2 all-rounders - say someone like Sobers at 6 and Kapil/Botham/Imran at 8. Or you can go with a specialist batsman at 6, wk at 7 and 4 specialist bowlers with no all-rounders. Other factor is how many spinners are going to be there in the 11 - only one spinner or 2 spinners. If only one spinner I would go with 4 bowler approach with someone like Sobers at 6 who can bowl a bit of spin. If 2 spinners are to be accounted for in the XI I would prefer to go with the 2 all-rounder approach with Kallis at 6 and another bowling all-rounder at 8 to support the main pacer. My picks for the 2 approaches.... Approach 1 (only 1 spinner in the team) - Sobers at 6, wk (Gilly) at 7 followed by 3 specialist pacers and a spinner. Approach 2 (2 spinners in the team) - Kallis at 6, wk (Gilly) at 7, Botham/Kapil/Imran at 8 followed by genuine pacer and 2 spinners. I guess you will need to specify the team composition before no. 6 to no. 8 can be selected as depending on 1 spinner or 2 in the team, selections will vary. I personally would go for approach 1 with Sobers at 6.

Sooda Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 It should be two spinners, hope it is, just to make it fair so we can pick two of each-spinner and paceman. With that in mind It should be a pace bowling all rounder, or even better one who can bowl both in Sobers.
Marut Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Sobers, of course. Sobers could be treated as a specialist batsman as well as an all rounder, and I guess no one else runs him close. So he would get in regardless of selection choices for 6,7, and 8.

He started to take his bowling seriously from the 2001 tour of India and was more of a threat as a bowler by the end of his career, even though he didn't always get a bucket full of wickets.
rkt.india Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 80s WI team and 2000s Aussie teams didn't have any alrounder. I dont think a team which has 4 great bowlers of all time and 6 great batsman of all time plus a WK/bat need an alrounder. So I didnt pick an alrounder.

Kallis is not too far behind him. Would have loved to see Keith Miller in there as well. Sobers-Miller-Kapil batting at 6-7-8 boy what a cricketing heaven that would be worth!!
