If the human race keeps growing fatter at American rates, the Earth may face a rise in food demand equal to that of nearly a billion extra people, British researchers warned on Monday. Expanding waistlines in the rich world pose a grave threat to our planet's finite resources, said the team, arguing that a population explosion in the Third World was often wrongly singled out as the chief menace. "If all countries had the BMI distribution of the USA, human biomass would increase by 58 million tonnes, an increase in mass equivalent to an extra 935 million people of average body mass," said the researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. A heavier body requires more energy, obtained from food, in both its active and restive states.
The food energy used to fuel the excess kilogrammes that overweight people carry around could nourish more than 100 million extra average-weight individuals, the team wrote in the journal BMC Public Health.
"The average (weight) is increasing everywhere. Everybody is getting fatter, even the thin people are getting fatter," co-author Ian Roberts told AFP.
"When people talk about the Earth and how many people it can maintain, they usually think of what is the population and how much is the population growing. Very quickly, people start pointing fingers at poor people in poor countries having too many babies."
"Once you start thinking in terms of flesh, actually one has to start pointing the finger at fat populations in wealthy countries as well," said Roberts.
The team said North America had six percent of the world's population, but 34 percent of mass attributed to obesity, compared to 61 percent of the population and 13 percent obesity mass for Asia.
"Over-consumption in wealthy fat countries contributes to under-consumption in poor, lean countries."
So which one of you fat fecks is to blame for the world's food problems?:orderorder: And yes it is possible to be thin and have high standards of living, Japan mean BMI: 22 (in 2005), US mean BMI: 29:hehe: obese (in 2005)

yesterday i was watching one old movie where there is this fat guy "Gundu kalyanam" featured. Guys like would be a rarity in India. But in US you can find 2 or 3 guys who are bigger than him in every shop.

and Im aiming for 27.5 by the end of the year :cantstop: :((
:cantstop: BMI shows only one side.. Waist size is also very important. Some might not have any muscles at all but big pot belly hence BMI could be less for them. Same way someone with lot of m uscles might have higher BMI despite being thin.

Yeah, heard about that one too, where waist to height is better indicator than BMI for healthy weight. Another one is waist to hip ratio. so many

I am at 27.5 BMI ..am I a culprit stealing poor ppl's food? :fear:
You might eat less than someone with BMI 24 but be much less active. @ topic, Amrika still donates food to other nations & some authority (maybe UN) actually "blamed" the increasing production of ethanol on the higher hunger levels in Mexico. Why should the developed nations with higher obesity be held responsible when the developing world multiplies at unsustainable rates ?

They manage to consume & waste a lot and then donate to other countries along with maintaining their state & national parks pretty well. That's better than a lot of countries around the world, no ? It was fashionable (and somewhat fair) to blame USA for emissions leading to climate change but these days China left it behind and we Indians along with the latter don't fancy any solid agreement on emission reductions. That though is a much more complex discussion wherein the developed nations actually deserve a good amount of blame.

What the chocolate fudge! People in 3rd world countries cannot get food because their govts are full of scumbag criminals who couldnt care less about the poverty/education/infrastructure/electricity/irrigation etc, not because people from richer countries are eating too much. History tells us that prosperity/human health has exploded in the last 150 years after the Industrial revolution for those nations that are willing to invest in themselves. Even as the population of the world has doubled/even trebled in the last 100+ years, life expectancy has sky-rocketed as well, clearly indicating that there is no shortage of resources in this planet, for those who are willing and able to harness it. My heart goes out to the poor people of the world, but If I am going to a restaurant to enjoy food, I am not going to wriggle my heart with manufactured guilt just because there are lots of poor kids in this world.
