Ultimate_Game Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 My team would be 6 batsmen + wk + 3 pacers + spinner so I wouldn't have a bowling all-rounder. In a team with Sobers at 6 and Gilly at 7 I would rather have the best 4 bowlers in Marshall, Ambrose/Garner, McGrath and Warne. I seriously considered including one of George Lohmann and Sydney Barnes (especially Barnes) but would go with the above-mentioned choices and maybe have Barnes in the squad along with Wasim Akram. My team :- Hobbs Gavaskar Bradman Tendulkar Richards Sobers Gilchrist Warne Marshall Ambrose/Garner McGrath

True and I did consider Hadlee and Imran but I couldn't go with either ahead of the ones I selected (Marshall, Ambrose/Garner and McGrath). I wanted to go with 3 fast bowlers and wanted 3 kinds of pacers :- 1. A fast bowler had to be a seam/swing bowler who could bowl at pace (Marshall) 2. A fast bowler who could bowl short of length and be a nasty piece of work (Ambrose/Garner) 3. A fast bowler ho would bowl line & length and be the stock bowler out of the 3 hardly giving anything away to the batsmen. I considered Imran, Hadlee and even Wasim Akram for 1 but I couldn't leave Marshall out. For 2nd it was between Ambrose and Garner and I still can't decide which one to pick. These guys could make life extremely difficult for batsmen and thunderbolts from around 9 feet high would add a different dimension to the bowling lineup. 3rd was easy as you could wake up McGrath at 3 in the morning and he will probably bowl short of off length hitting top of off. I would also pick Wasim Akram in my squad of all-time 16 as he adds more variety by being a left armer and he could do anything - yorkers, swing, seam, cutters, slower ones, bouncers etc. and also bowl round the wkt to create an awkward angle for the batsmen. Occasionally I would play Akram in place of McGrath or maybe Marshall, but I couldn't find any place for Hadlee or Imran by following this approach.

Other than that Imran had two phases when he was mainly a bowler and another when he was a better batsman than a bowler. my 8, 9, 10, 11 would be.. Shane Warne a magical spinner best spinner cricket has every produced who himself was a capable batsman. Curtly Ambrose a tall fast bowler extra bounce, pace, and accuracy, menacing stature, another one who could handle the bat well. Dale Steyn Best outswing bowler ever, can generate steam whenever required, almost a complete fast bowler, has done well everywhere, and is no mug with the bat as well. Glenn McGrath a typical #11 but the most dependable bowler ever.

IMO Davidson & Miller should be ahead of Cairns.

But Kallis and Pollock played a lot of matches together.

He would never get into any World XI as a batting all rounder, having Sobers, Kallis etc ( who have batting averages in the high 50s) as his contenders. The only chance is if Sobers is pushed up as a pure batsman. He batted up the order ( sometimes at 3) and had limited success there, but he was far more successful as a bowler.

Botham was vastly superior in batting to Imran during his hey days. Botham was a potential match winner with the bat and the ball. Imran had many match winning performances as a bowler, as a batsman he scored a lot of runs, but never made the impact Botham did with the bat. Botham, like Richards also scored very fast and many of his big knocks were in a match winning cause. Infact, Kapil Dev, made a bigger impact than Imran with the bat, inspite of inconsistancy and lower averages. Botham hit 14 test hundreds to Imran's six and England won nine of those matches while Pak won only once when Imran hit a hundred. Miller was also superior to Imran as a batsman.
