Pioneer Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Islamabad: A Pakistani engineer has built a car that runs on water, a feat that left onlookers astounded. Engineer Waqar Ahmad drove his car using water as fuel on Thursday during a demonstration for parliamentarians, scientists and students, Dawn reported from this Pakistan capital. He said cars could be driven by a system fuelled by water instead of petrol or CNG.The onlookers were taken aback when they saw it and a cabinet sub-committee lauded the 'Water Fuel Kit Project'. Religious Affairs Minister Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah, who heads the panel, said the engineer would have their full support. The media report explained that the water fuelling system is a technology in which 'hydrogen bonding' with distilled water produces hydrogen gas to run the car. Ahmad had earlier told Shah about the unique project and it was taken to the federal cabinet which asked its sub-committee to discuss it. During the demonstration, Shah himself drove the car. The minister said that Ahmad would be given complete security and the formula would be kept secure. Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Finance Minister Hafeez Shaikh value the project, he said. Wasn't there this guy who made this herbal fuel in India and was finally caught? Why would Pakistan, that is tied to OPEC and is practically a slave to Saudi Arabia, be funding and developing engines that run on water? At some point Saudis would have killed this project and buried it long before anyone heard of it. So if they haven't done it is it because they don't think it works?

But from what the news channels et al are showing it seems to be working fine. I'm still waiting to see what will come out of this, if it really can be used, if it can be used for the masses and at what cost. Saudis with audis may be angry, but if this is really genuine then it'd be a huge help for those waiting hours and hours at the gas stations.

In your opinion, what's the likelihood of a technological breakthrough that results in a viable mass market solution coming out of a garage ?

Sure as long as you can extract Hydrogen out of H20 Do you spend more energy to get the hydrogen out than you are getting out of it? Yes there currently is no way that you can extract Hydrogen in an energy efficient way, so you will end up spending more energy than producing it. Realisitcally seeing the video it looks like a scam, because if he has mastered the art of extracting hydrogen easily, the setup will be monstrous atleast initially, this looks like some fuel tool kit you get in ebay.

The "engineer" is using electrolysis to separate water into Hydrogen and Oxygen, and then burning the Hydrogen to produce energy. The problem, however, is that the energy required to conduct the electrolysis is greater than the energy produced by the Hydrogen. So, there is a net loss of usable energy. I'm I'm not mistaken, he's using the car battery to perform the electrolysis. Once the car battery dies (which it will, since there is a net loss of usable energy) , this car will no longer be able to run. Simply put, water cannot be used as a fuel for cars. It's been tried many times before, and it just won't work. To say otherwise would be defying the law of conservation of energy.
