He is actually quitting at the right time - his game has dropped down and with England in trouble there would have been the thought to sack him anyway. It will be surprising if he does retire. He is not a character who chickens out. Very much unlike English.

Not true. He was the guy along with Flower who went to India's dressing room after Bell was given run out in a test match and pressurized Dhoni to take the decision back. If India had done something like that, there would have been outrage and Dhoni/BCCI would have been called a bully.

Flower and Strauss made a visit to the Indian dressing room and requested Dhoni to overturn the appeal - which he may have done anyway. An opposition captain walking into your dressing room is not something odd and back in the day happened quite often after the game for a few drinks. A coach to walk over can be argued over. It is important to use the right words.

There is no sudden suicide if you look deeper. [1] England not doing well last year [2] Strauss not performing with the bat [3] Pietersen issue was draining him [4] Long tours of India and back-to-back Ashes next year which makes him spend less time with this family So if you put that together very good move.

It has clearly been a tough decision to make, but I believe that it is both in the best interests of the England cricket team and myself to step down at this stage. I am extremely proud of everything I have achieved as a cricketer, and I have found myself very fortunate to play in an era when some of English cricket's greatest moments have occurred. I have loved every minute of it. All that remains is for me to wish Andy, Alastair and the rest of the team the very best for the coming months. I will be an interested spectator.
