Dhoni did well on that tour to England in 2007' date=' particularly in Lords test. However in that series we had both Karthick and Dhoni playing all test matches and Karthick had come out as better bat between two of them. Not to suggest that Karthick should replace Dhoni in test team now (Saha should IMHO), but once when he had run in same race as Dhoni, he had come first.[/quote'] It was Dhoni's innings in the Lords Test that ultimately led to us winning the series. He batted with the tail and with some help from the rain, saved the match for us. Karthik was playing as an opener and a specialist batsman which is why he was bound to get more runs than Dhoni.

I'm not saying Karthik is better, but in that series Karthik was better bat for sure

D Karthik was India's best batsmen in that series, leave aside comparison with Dhoni.

Exatly that was my point. Adding in your list, he had scored 60 in Lords second innings as well.

Doesn't work like that. Check Sehwag's average in SA, NZ and England.

Here is a more detailed analysis that uses a large number of parameters. http://blogs.espncricinfo.com/itfigures/archives/2012/09/test_wicketkeepers_everything.php Yeah, Dhoni is one of the greatest captain wkt keepers ever. ( though the recent white washes have eroded his reputation significantly) On an informal basis, Dhoni's test match batting skills are inferior to Engineer, Kirmani, More, Mongia etc. Dhoni however made maximum use of his abilities. Dhoni has done much more to the team than any of the former wkt keepers of India. Being a captain and being a wicket keeper together is an extremely difficult job. Wicket keeper needs to keep an eye on the ball and the captain does just the opposite - plan strategies etc. Wicket keepers need to have extreme focus on a narrow field of the game while captains need to have focus on the whole playing field. Wicket keeper captain is a contradiction and there have been very few successful wicket keeper captains in history over a large number of matches. No one else comes any where near Dhoni. I don't think those who ridiculed Dhoni on this thread gave this a thought.

So can anyone list the important knocks played by any other WK apart from Dhoni away from home. From top of my head i can remember his 70 odd in lords , 50 plus and 6th wicket partneship with Bhajji that secured us the test series in NZL , His century in Pakistan and also 35 he scored against SA in the low scoring victory in durban .Probably could list a few more if i could check cricinfo.
