I have never said capitalism but blamed in on monopoly by a few providers. Licenses are not granted to many. A good example is the reliance hike in cellular charges recently citing less competition and hence, no compelling reason to keep prices low once the contracts of companies like Uninor etc. were removed after the 2G scam. In fact, monopoly and healthy competition are both parts of a healthy capitalism. But in case of internet in India, monopoly has got the upper hand and hence, it was not good.

Funny you mention Reliance - they had to literally involve in a dog fight with VSNL to have cables across the ocean. Gauti, Even after doing such ridiculous FUP's they want to charge more for streaming services like YouTube, BigFlix etc. Check out Mittal's (Airtel CEO/President) comment at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona. I feel that in addition to monopoly and technical issues customer service is not good as ISP's think they can over promise and under deliver.

I promptly replied - "Consumers make the economy and not the other way round. The economy better wilt to the demands of the consumers else will take a backing.". Not only were Airtel's statements at MWC surprising but they were ludicrous because Airtel made huge profits out of their broadband business last year.

The truth is that 20% of broadband users guzzle up more than 80% of the bandwidth making the net slower for everyone else. The problem is that the FUP limits that Indian ISPs have are ridiculous 50-100 GB are a pittance according to global standards but consist of the highest slabs of plans Indian ISPs offer. The limits are used for differentiating plans instead of their original purpose - to prevent hogging of bandwidth. What is a ridiculous practice by the ISPs is the regulation of speeds since higher broadband speed doesnt cost anything in running costs. It is only the initial investment in DSLAMs that is required to provide reliable speeds. After that 100 mbps can be provided for more or less the same cost as a 2mbps connection. The running costs heavily depend on data usage which according to an ISP owner can be given for ~ Rs 10 per GB. The current plans for Airtel and BSNL however charge in the range of 30-80 rs per GB which is daylight robbery. The truth is that these companies are cutting corners by refusing to improve their infrastructure since the status quo gives them decent profits and they dont have any incentive to provide better speeds at lower costs.

A 100 Mbps pure unlimited plan there costs less than Rs.600 (584.885 on changing 39 leu to Indian Rupees). Whole of Europe and most of Eastern Asia has dirt cheap broadband compared to Indian standards.
