Pretty sure I'll be the odd one out here but I think the Indian batsmen face a bigger challenge playing some of the finest international pacers on SA pitches rather than facing our trundlers in home conditions. The only thing Indian batsmen have to worry against english bowling is the likes of Broad, Finn, Anderson and co. Facing our first class bowling is hardly going to be proper preparation against bowlers of that standard. The only real factor they miss out is on spin, but Swann will be hardly a threat, the guy is a shadow of his former self. Also imagine if gambhir scored an easy fifty in a Duleep trophy match?!! The selectors and public will be fooled to think he's found form, not realizing the issue and end up getting out in 2 balls against the english. Now against quality bowlers he stands exposed rather than somehow scrape through a Duleep trophy innings.

playing 20-30 balls in T20 matches won't exactly help him (or any other batsman for that matter) in regaining form even if those matches are played against the best bowlers in the world. What he needs is to spend time on the crease and that cannot happen in T20.

facing ENg and aussies on home conditions will not be that easy..2nd test aginst NZ was the wake-up call. Also should have to take up as series by series, match by match. Series aginst SA is still a long way to go

Obviously you guys want to blitz them, but if India lose it might shake things up for the good of Indian crickets future, especially after the president seemed to not care about winning away, if they lost at home it might force a rethink into the teams preparations in the future.[/quote'] we did lose 8-0 last year and no action was taken.....but then again, losing badly at home is quite another thing so maybe losses against Eng & Aus at home may result in much needed change.

I understand your point and wont be surprised if he plays decent in Duleep matches. The thing is scores against bowlers hitting 120ks on flat tracks might improve his confidence but the challenge of facing the english pace attack is much greater. Gambhir has proven time and again that SL bowlers in sub con conditions rarely worry him but raise the bar and he is all at sea. On the other hand opening for KKR in SA he has to up his ante. I understand its no full day game but he cant survive the first over when there are 20 overs in the innings. The Duleep trophy scores will simply be a mirage when the english bowlers test him. On the other hand if he sat out a season and played FC then I agree with your point, playing a whole season of domestic and working on his batting makes sense. But an odd Duleep trophy score will just be a hogwash.

Agree 100%. If a player is struggling with form/technique he should be made to take a step down to play 1st class cricket in or outside India. What I tried to imply a one off good score in a Duleep trophy match will be a poor yardstick to judge whether a player deserves a slot in the national side.

Well the some of the arguments were along the lines of - assuming that Gambhir is not going to be dropped from the opening slot for the first test of the England series, he should use this time in the Duleep Trophy rather than CL T20. The reason is to make the best of whatever you have got to offer. Your suggestions and mine are more long term planning.

If anyone of you guys are dreaming about bringing back any of those big shot players from champions league than you guys are ...... just dreaming.. CSA and CA do not have to answer IPL owners but BCCI does.. FYI.. BCCI.... Owners...... Huge Investment....... Huge Prize Money...... Profit.. IPL is golden egg hatching machine for BCCI.. they care much less about the Test winniing as long as Fans are supporting IPL and Champions League..
