It's just my opinion :dontknow: Those were SL batsmen who I loved watching when in full flow. Kalu was a failure as an international bat, but even now it's exciting to watch few of his innings time and again (maybe it's like Afridi for Pakistan fans :D ). And for me there was nothing better to admire and emulate than Marvan's back foot drives. Most Batsmen play the back foot drive as a punch rather than a real stroke. Marvan used to play a full flowing drive on the back foot using his wrists to full effect. Actually it's the riskier version than the punch but who cares I just love it! In terms of overall batting style, Aravinda and Lara hands down.

Just to draw an analogy, there are people who enjoy Federer's game more and loathe a guy like Rafa slugging it out, while there are some who enjoy watching the kind of Rafa plays.

I can't stand watching stonewallers bat. A player is considered great not only by the amount of runs he scores but how he scores them. A great player not only scores big, but he scores his runs relatively quickly giving his bowlers enough time to knock the 20 opposition wickets. I wonder how many specialist batsman have played the game in the last 30-40 years with a strike rate worse than Dravid. The guy simply lacked flair. Add to that he was terrible against Australia and South Africa, overall and particularly away from home (the top 2 attacks he faced). Someone like Gavaskar too played defensive cricket but the difference is Sunny scored big time against West Indies and particularly away from home. He averages 38 odd against Australia, that's below average. Ok, I was wrong about his performance in Australia, but an average of 41.64 ain't really staggering either. It's just borderline good/descent. Regarding southafrica most of our batsman have struggled due to bowler friendly pitches and Most top order batsman have struggled in sa. That's not an excuse for him to average 29 odd in South Africa, that's miserable. He has played 22 innings over there. Tendulkar averages 47 odd in South Africa. Compare his performance in S.A. with his contemporaries like Tendulkar, Ponting and Lara, you'll get the true picture.

What Ian Chappell is saying applies to teams with good bowling attacks. For a team like India scoring quickly can be counter productive as well, not that it has anything to do with the topic being discussed here. Just to quote a couple of examples, if Sehwag had scored his 203 at Bangalore or 195 at Melbourne at a Dravid like pace, India would not have lost either tests.
