The criticism of Zaheer's fitness....

....playing the Devil's advocate is unfounded. The only major series he has missed due to injury has been the India England series, otherwise he has been India's best bowler in Australia and of course his top notch performance in the WC.

Yeah. With a bit more support, he would have looked far better. Umesh blew hot and cold too frequently and Ishant was always unlucky, so he always did not get the right amount of pressure exerted from the other end.

That was ages back and has no relevance to his current fitness.
He just suffered another injury in ranji match and left the field with groin strain and that is his current fitness as I know but was miraculoulsy declared fit in the fitness test next day of the selection. He has a history of breaking down mid matches and England tour was not the first instance of him break down in mid match though it can happen to any fast bowler but it happens to him more than others and then he did not look anything but threatening against NZ. He still can contribute but thing is to prepare for life without him in next 1 year which our selectors dont look to do as Sandeep Patil said in his statament that he is not thinking long term. Ishant's inclusion in test when he has not even been doing that well in FC is perplexing. He needs more FC matches and warming the bench is not going to help his bowling. Rather the guy who has been bowling well in FC likes of Pankaj or Dinda could have been there though I dont rate Dinda much. Pankaj is one guy who has shown remarkable improvement since Mayrick Pringle's arrival last year and is a real test prospect right now.

The guy is possibly our greates pacer ever, at least in top 3. Yet regularly gets slaughtered here. O how people forget what this champ has done for his country. He was one of the main reasons we got to number 1, was crucial in winning countless test matches for us. I am more then willing to give a champ like him opportuities to show that he really is finished or that he is still the man. I think he will have a great year. His injury stuff is seriously over hyped

Why is the criticism unwarranted? Forget the series he has missed due to injuries, its those matches where he has left the team in a lurch by being unfit to bowl all through the match (2nd test vs SA at Eden in 2010, Lord's test vs Eng,) or not being fully fit to bowl in the 1st test of a series ( vs SA at Centurion in 2011) which has hurt the team the most. Plus most of the times especially in last 20-24 months, he has turned up for series with a few extra kilos and looking like he could break down anytime. Also, since his return to the side in 2006 SA series, he has missed 21 of the 64 tests we have played, thats missing one third of the tests.

Wow... how many of them due to injuries?

For once I seem to agree with you. It was just a nightmare for us when he broke down in the first session of England tour. But he played the full Aus tour without any injuries and also was our best bowler.

No. Thing was when Umesh did well, Zak failed. Zak did well, Umesh failed. Ishant failed whole tour.

FYI he missed the first test in South Africa Ofcourse he is a bowler and is he doing his main job well-yes/maybe but as a senior member of the squad, his commitment while fielding and batting(which ties back to his fitness) in recent times is apalling- Now add doubts about his commitment to the injury he suffered that set the precedent of things to come especially after a long lay off and then you will find answers to your question.

He is a 34 year old pace bowler and to expect him to remain fit for every game is unrealistic I would say, given the fact that there are pace bowlers much younger than him who are pretty frequently ruled out due to injuries. Over the last decade or so, the only pace bowlers to have played substantial cricket beyond that age would be McGrath and Martin, which shows it's not easy to remain fit as a pace bowler beyond a certain age.
