The Outsider Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Though that may have some validity statistically speaking ever since Ganguly left in 2008 India has rose to the No.1 team in the Test rankings for the first time ever and has stayed there now for a year. So thankfully we did not even miss a beat while at the same time giving opportunities to some of these young players eventually for one of Kohli' date=' Pujara, Raina or Rohit to come good. Too much talent there to not find a replacement for a 42 career average player that Ganguly was.[/quote'] Ganguly's average when not captaining the side is much better (which is the role the incumbent will be slotting into). And for most of his captaincy tenure his influence was positive on the team, so one can live with the drop in average as a captain. Moreover, it's just not about racking averages and numbers - the incumbent will also need to have the ability play critical knocks when the chips are down like at Brisbane, Kanpur, or Bangalore. He also offered a decent part time seam option which is a rarity in Indian cricket.
The Outsider Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I still beleive' date=' keeping age aside, Wasim Jaffer is still one of the best test openers in India. He might not have performed in Australia, but I can assure you, he is still one of our top batsmans when it comes to test cricket. His elegance, his control still continues for Mumbai when he plays. I want to see more of him in International cricket.[/quote'] Yeah, as a stop gap option Jaffer is a pretty good option. With Gambhir's rise and his one poor series in Australia he seems to be completely off the radar though.

To me players like that needs to be rewarded not punished when the opportunity presents itself. With VS and GG nursing injuries it would have been appropriate for Jaffer opening with Mukund in this WI Test series based on the sheer volume of runs he has been scoring at the FC level and not Vijay. Simple as that.

Plus he has stopped opening in domestic cricket these days, plays as a middle order batsman.

Moreover, it's just not about racking averages and numbers - the incumbent will also need to have the ability play critical knocks when the chips are down like at Brisbane, Kanpur, or Bangalore. Agree it is just not about averages. We have seen traces of scoring when the chips are down from some of the other players as well. Pujara in one of those 4th inning partnerships with SRT to guide India to win when a wicket there would have made it tough for us to win, Raina here in the 1st Test playing well also Raina in that 4th inning chase in SL did well to finish off the game supporting VVS very well once SRT fell with still 80 odd runs to get. I think there is enough on display to feel optimistic. Whoever that No.6 is to me should not be facing the musical chairs scenario. Pujara, Kohli, Raina, Rohit. Does not matter. But something tell me YS will have something to say about it though he is not my preferred choice at all for Tests unless he shows me a thing or two playing a full season of domestic cricket.

phaedrus Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 yeah, but he used to struggle again pace. the number of times he used to get beaten for pace didnt give me much confidence in him.
vvvslaxman Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Yeah' date=' as a stop gap option Jaffer is a pretty good option. With Gambhir's rise and his one poor series in Australia he seems to be completely off the radar though.[/quote'] After Brett Lee's epic pwning of Jaffer repeatedly the same way in Australia, his test career was as good as over. He also didn't do well in England against moving ball. He is one of those guys who is highly suspect outside the off stump. Even slightest movement can undo him. When there is absolutely no movement he can bat all day.
kabira Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 ^not true entirely. He did well in SA, where ball moves around 100% atleast with new ball.
Cricketics Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I thought Jaffer and Karthik in England did put a decent stand. Just like you can't say that Aakash Chopra sucked in Australia with his 30s, we wanted him to give a good stand with Sehwag in Australia in 04, and he did that.. Same way Jaffer did similar in 07 tour to England.
vvvslaxman Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 8.3 Lee to Jaffer, OUT, that's the breakthrough, the slower ball beating Jaffer who poked through to Gilchrist W Jaffer c †Gilchrist b Lee 4 (38m 27b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.81 15.3 Lee to Jaffer, OUT, but that's definitely out this time! Lee bangs in outside off, the ball hardly gets up, Jaffer hardly moves his feet and the ball catches the edge through to Gilchrist W Jaffer c †Gilchrist b Lee 15 (67m 40b 2x4 0x6) SR: 37.50 6.4 Lee to Jaffer, OUT, bowled him! That was sheer pace from Brett Lee, 146.7 kph. The yorker angled into Jaffer before swinging a shade away from the bat and crashing into the base of off stump, Jaffer was beaten for pace and the outswing made that virtually unplayable, Lee planned that well - following up several short balls with the yorker 0.5 Lee to Jaffer, OUT, Jaffer goes! Lee strikes with his fifth ball, another good delivery, short, and Jaffer pushes forward, snapped up by Clarke at third slip, taking the catch at stomach height W Jaffer c Clarke b Lee 0 (4m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00 19.2 Lee to Jaffer, OUT, gets the edge! Australia are right back in this already, and once again Lee has got Jaffer, driving away from his body W Jaffer c †Gilchrist b Lee 16 (94m 53b 2x4 0x6) SR: 30.18 9.3 Clark to Jaffer, OUT, and he's gone, Clark does indeed get the breakthrough, shooting another one down the off-side channel, and Jaffer opens his shoulders to steer a straightforward back-foot cut to the gully W Jaffer c Hussey b Clark 11 (45m 27b 1x4 0x6) SR: 40.74 This guy is suitable for flat pitches. Nothing more. He didn't exactly did great either in England or in SA. There were more failures than success.

Sooda Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 Why not Kaif? Ofcourse he cannot put bat to ball on anything bowled over 116kmph but if we keep that minor detail aside we can consider his uselessness as well right about now. :-) Really? For a guy who 'nnot put bat to ball on anything bowled over 116kmph' he forged a pretty good career for himself indeed. Im not saying more as when we have discussed this in the past you had nothing to say to the solid points made in Kaifs favour, just rhetorical garbage like what you posted there. In any case if you want to indulge in this obsession I will be very happy to discuss it with you elsewhere, not this thread.
Sooda Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 To be fair Mukund is in the "young prospects" category right now. Vijay is more of a worry, as he is 27 and has been around for a while now. We'll have to see how these two get on in the chances they get. Sehwag will probably not shift down till a couple of years at least, and maybe by that point a young talent will have emerged. But to be honest, the most pressing concern right now is for one of the young batsmen to cement themselves at no.6 as the middle-order guys will be gone sooner than Veeru. We've seen glimpses but we need one of the guys to average 45+ with a couple of hundreds and make that spot their own. yeah , he has done well on away A tours so hopefully he can come good for India. Just that beyond him and Vijay- and they still have much to prove- its a bit bare. Youre right re: Vijay..but he has not played a lot away from home so hope he takes advantage of this oppo... As for no 6, guess youre right, but between Raina/Pujara/Kohli and even Rohit there are bats who have proven themslves at ODI level so we have an idea of their quality. Really want Viru to bat lower in the order, think its the way forward. His eyes are going to decline with age and its best that he is not facing the new swinging ball much. AND Love the idea for SRT at 4 and him at 5...
1983-2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Jaffer should have been kept in the mix as a backup opener after vijay
1983-2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 STUART Wedge believes Wasim Jaffer is just getting started after striking his first century for Himley. The big-hitting Indian batsman smashed an unbeaten 137 in just his third game for the Stourbridge Road side as they swept aside Smethwick by 150 runs. Victory ensured Himley remain top of the Birmingham Premier League after a rain hit Bank Holiday schedule but all the after-match buzz surrounded Jaffer and his memorable innings. The Mumbai skipper was hired by Himley after the club failed to bring back regular overseas star TP Singh and Wedge, who is enjoying a dream start to his own captaincy, is delighted with his impact. He said: “When you look at Wasim and TP they are probably polar opposites when it comes to batting styles. “TP can be very destructive wheras Wasim is a more traditional batsman, he paced his innings extremely well on Saturday. “He stuck in early on with Chris Tranter when the ball was moving about a bit but when it was time to push the run rate up he didn’t hold back. “If he continues in this form he’s going to have a major impact on the league this season and a major impact on our team. “From my point of view it’s been great, when you have players of that quality captaincy becomes easy, you really don’t have to do much - just let them get on with it.†Himley’s total of 270-2 included fine half centuries for Tranter and Ben Smith, while Dan Smith took 5-31 and Shafiq Ahmed 4-17 as Smethwick were bombed out for just 120. While Himley are flying, Wedge has sounded a note of caution ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Walsall - the scene of the club’s darkest hour last season when they were bowled out for 72 in a game which barely made it past 3pm. He said: “The beauty of the Premier League is it’s full of strong sides and you have to be at your best. “We know Walsall are quite capable of beating us, they are one of the most consistent sides year in year out. “If we can take the attitude we have had the last few games it should stand us in good stead.†http://www.stourbridgenews.co.uk/sport/cricket/9061607.Jaffer_has_his_cake__Indian_star_smashes_137_not_out/ he's playing league cricket in england if sehwag fails to get match fit in time:winky:
Cricketics Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Karthik looked fine. Jaffer with lot of luck made whatever runs he made. Yes. Karthik actually performed well. I remember he got into England skin. He played some gritty knocks. One of them was pretty good. He frustrated Sidebottom a lot and told him "check the scoreboard" I doubt he will get a go in our test team again anytime soon. He is so out of picture rite now. Parthiv Patel is the name taken whenever we talk about replacement of Dhoni as 2nd keeper. It's hard for him to come to National side rite now.
