Clarke Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 A month or so late, but I couldn't fully digest the love for the movie from the critics & fans. What's your opinion on the latest bond flick ? The two things that I couldn't fathom: - The plot: Bond & co are incapable of matching the evil genius in tech, so they go backwards so as have a fair shot at the villain. This was worse than Bond being hit in the nuts. What's coming next, fighting with bows & arrows ? - Exploding pen :mad: Bond mocking an earlier Bond that many of us grew up watching :mad: Some things are just off limits and this is one of those.

Brosnan's last was a decade back. He did 4 and this was Craig's third. The change argument to prop up the current avatar of Bond shouldn't be relevant anymore.

The change argument to prop up the current avatar of Bond shouldn't be relevant anymore. but if you see Craig's movies, they have progressively toughened up the Bond Character making him closer to Jason Bourne than Inspector Gadget. This is yet another step in that direction. Javier Bardem's role was wasted in Skyfall and that was my only bugbear with the movie.

Will watch it soon. Couldn't agree more about Brosnan though, he was awful as Bond. Cheesy is so the apt word.

I see Bond having his own identity and didn't mind the gadgets, it was his evolution with the times. This one took a complete 180 and what's worse, mocks the previous Bond. You see him as tougher, I find him weaker. He's unable to keep up with the times and appears fragile. Besides, Silva was terrific!

zen Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Most of the Bond films are superb in their own way. Skyfall is brilliant and stands proudly in the company of other great Bond films .... Not surprisingly, the film has grossed over $1 Billion at the world wide BO so far, making it probably the most successful Sony release Like other Craig films, the film does not start with a gun barrel sequence. However, we are transported through the picturesque Istanbul on one of the exciting action and chase sequences which is probably the best in the film. What makes the sequence so engrossing is the background score. You have to appreciate the score in 7.1 surround sound system. The background score, which I think is by Thomas Newman, is one of the highlights of the film Another sequence takes us to Shanghai, which has been captured beautifully on screen. And than to a casino in Macau where Kamodo dragons show how lethal they can be. In the background, the score is always adding value to the action We are transported to a rustic inhabited island (which is somewhere in Japan and again beautifully captured on screen) to meet the mysterious villain, Javier Bardem. Barden is just not motivated by world domination or money, but he has reasons for his vengeance. There are some great moments on the island The movie than becomes a cat and a mouse game introducing us back to the classic Aston Martin of earlier Bond films and the stunning landscape of Scotland. It is in the stunning landscape that a sad finale is played. Albert Finney plays a warm little part too In the epilogue, we are introduced to some of the characters that we have been watching since ages to give the viewers, particularly the Bond franchise fans, a ah-ha moment on learning their backgrounds. After that you will never see some of these characters, even in past Bond films, in a lighter vein To summarize, what makes the film work is a combination of factors including Bond films trademarks like excellent cinematography and background score and some good piece of acting by the characters. For example, Bardem plays one of the best Bond villians and Dench is mesmerizing as 'M'. These two are well supported by Fiennes and Finney. Craig as usual is brilliant as Bond .... Undoubtedly, Skyfall is not only one of the stronger bond films, but also one of the stronger films released in 2012

He knew Bond would kill that assassin in Shanghai and hence get that gambling chip and hence go to Macau and hence trace his way back to Silva via that Bond girl and he knew Bond would beat his guards on that abandoned island and that he would be captured and hence get into the MI6- as that was the only way he could get at M. Foresight. Bond meanwhile could simply break into her house

Besides, Silva was terrific! We'll have to agree to disagree then. The cheesy gadgets looked good in the 60s/70s and 80s but now a bit of realism is warranted. The old bond didnt have a wrinkle on his shirt even after surviving a nuclear apocalypse, but now the bond gets roughed up pretty regularly but yet wins in the end. That makes for better watching IMO. As far as Silva goes, I found something missing. The homoerotic undertones were supposed to make bond/viewers feel uncomfortable with his screen presence, but I found his portrayal somewhat caricaturish. He was no doubt extremely clever as Sooda posted and was two steps ahead of every move that bond made.
