His strike rate was extremely poor in test matches, i know they have to play slow in test matches, but he was just blocking everything and boring. I am not sure he can be a good ODI batsman. I will be happy if I am proven wrong. Read this article in Times now: In today's mad world of sixhitting cricket, where strike-rates determine the value of a batsman in the shorter formats, somebody like Cheteshwar Pujara doesn't easily fit in. That is, unless of course, your team is in deep trouble, unable to last the stipulated 50 overs, and is desperately seeking someone to hold ground at the other end. Desperate times call for desperate measures. In the last two years, India's batting in One-day cricket - a format in which they're currently world champions - has mostly revolved around domineering individual displays, be it Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag's double hundreds, Virat Kohli's run-glut, or MS Dhoni's feverish down-the-order attempts to revive an innings gone wrong. Barring a Yuvraj Singh or a Suresh Raina coming good on odd occasions, the team's One-day fortunes have suffered immensely for lack of that one dependable anchor in the middle-order, someone who is not enamoured of the six-hitting trend. To stand there till the job is accomplished, and to do it consistently, takes a lot more than just good technique or perseverance . Rahul Dravid used to do it and that is one of the key reasons for India's rise in the 50-over format. Pujara promises a similar ability to absorb the shocks. Like Dravid, he loves to play within his limitations, has the technique to adjust to all formats and can now even strike well on both sides of the wicket. On Wednesday, for example, in his masterly knock of 261 not out in the Ranji quarterfinals, he played the sweep, the lofted drives and even the reverse sweep with elan . He has been included in the One-day team at the cost of India's once most feared top-order batsman -- Virender Sehwag, which may not be an ideal situation for him. But an antidote to the Sehwag-like blitzkrieg that fans usually enjoy is perhaps what India need badly at the moment. "He's the sort of batsman who normally has a Plan B in place," says former India opener Aakash Chopra. "He's like the driver who'll quickly move to first gear and go further slowly, and depending on the situation he can be aggressive too. You look at Virat or Raina or Dhawan, they'll start in Gear Three and stay there," he explains. Pujara may not be the kind of batsman who'll guide a chase of 350. But if you're batting in dire conditions, chasing a tricky 220, 240 or 260, he can be India's go-to man. "Batsmen who are high on technique don't normally attract eyeballs in the shorter formats, which is a very wrong way of looking at things. But they are needed in shorter formats too, especially in tough conditions or against top bowling sides," says Chopra. Right now, in a line-up that boasts of batsmen who can single-handedly change the course of play with sheer aggression, there's plenty of space for a Pujara who can lend that bit of solidity. The two losses against Pakistan in the recent One-day series were largely a result of India's failure with the bat. For a Dhoni or a Yuvraj to come and wallop, they need one man to hang around at the other end, stemming the fall of wickets. Now that Pujara is in, it will be important for Dhoni to ensure he gets to bat within the top four. Either ahead of Virat Kohli, or just after him. And the Indian team think-tank will have to remain patient with Pujara till he settles down. "As of now, it looks very unlikely. Let's see what happens tomorrow. If somebody gets unfit, we'll see." Seems like the captain isn't very keen on playing Pujara.

Sandeep99 Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Pujara is the guy India needs in the middle order! Look at how wickets fell against Pakistan's fast bowlers under helpful conditions... The thing is, it's not just that Indian batsmen don't have the technique to face the seaming and swinging ball., even the shyte Pakistani batsmen knew batting would become easy if we display discipline for 10 overs! This is a guy who can withstand the storm when the conditions are unfavorable., atleast he has the patience to do it unlike the superstars who just want to hit all the balls for fours and sixes

Lot of guys got out while trying to survive in the ODI against Pakistan. So we need to fix that first before going to build a power packed unit.

The point is, Pujara doesn't even need to be a power hitter with the likes of Kohli, Raina, Dhoni surrounding him! It's a shame I'm saying this but he can be used as our 'shield' in One day cricket! Affect of 20/20 over-dosage on many of you it seems..
