CG Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Is Dhoni our biggest problem in tests? He has been a below average captain but for me' date=' opners and middle order batting is a bigger concern, not Dhoni.[/quote'] Yeah expect jadeja as no 7.
Lord Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Virat doesnt have great numbers anyway.maybe captaincy is the tonic he needs.not everybody gets destroyed by reponsibility.some thrive,Kohli seems that kind to me:P
saneindian Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Sehwag as the test captain? Will be a good reward for his poor fitness, don't care a damn attitude , not to forget his wonderful form. And wher do we play our next few series after Aus series- SA, NZ, England places where Sehwag couldn't score even when he was in a very good form between 2008-11! Giving him the captaincy will be Two steps forward, 4 backwards. I would much rather wait for Kohli to come back to some form and then be handed the captaincy on a long term basis.
Number Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Even if someone is temporary option, we should take that. We are not in the position of long term planning as of now.

Captain is not accountable ,so why should players be accountable.
Crookbond Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 He performed in the most recent series. He has been mediocre over the last 3 years, but so has Dhoni. And anyway my first choice is Sehwag and not Gambhir so if you wish to exclude Gambhir from the discussion please do so. What is Dhoni's captaincy pedigree? Let's hear it. Gambhir "performed" in the most recent series? You are smart enough to know that "performance" goes far beyond mere numbers. He looked vulnerable outside off stump and the last I heard Facebook is going to rename their "Poke" to "Gambhir" in memory of the stroke he plays outside off stump. In any case, 1 series over three years does not give him any kind of leverage either. Yes - so as of for now the real contender is Sehwag as I can see. Now, let us discuss on Sehwag as we have discussed earlier. What are Sehwag's captaincy credentials in domestic or in the IPL? You would like to exclude IPL but captaincy is captaincy. Did Sehwag bring in any fresh ideas when he captained in the Adelaide Test match? No. Was the result different? No. You may still wish to nominate Sehwag as a Test match captain contender but this comes down to individual gut feeling rather than any pre-defined formula. It is not fait accompli as some here would like to believe. On a pure skills perspective or on performance there is nothing to suggest one could do better than the other. Personally, I would bat for Tendulkar. I prefer a calm dressing room than a Jaat Buddhi one.
Crookbond Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 If you can read i said last series.Everybody has been poor even dhoni.Gambhir had a good sa series in 2011 and then he got injured in eng and struggled in aus and agianst nz.But scored runs agianst eng in last test series,He is going no where and same with shewag or kohli. Anybody in this trio should be made captain. If one series is good enough to make one as captain, I would think Dhoni should remain as Test captain based on his performance in the NZ series.
The Outsider Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Is Dhoni our biggest problem in tests? He has been a below average captain but for me' date=' opners and middle order batting is a bigger concern, not Dhoni.[/quote'] Changes have already been made to the middle order with Laxman and Dravid leaving and possibly Tendulkar soon as well. Zaheer has been dropped. New openers have been tried at least in ODIs. What hasn't changed is a mediocre keeper and captain.

The problem with Sehwag apart from performance also has been his repeated disruptive nature to the team ethos and culture. I would avoid such an individual and in any case as you say Sehwag has done almost nothing overseas. I would prefer a known evil than an unknown devil.
CG Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 If one series is good enough to make one as captain' date=' I would think Dhoni should remain as Test captain based on his performance in the NZ series.[/quote'] Gambhir was not the captain when we lost all those tests .Dhoni should still be in the team but captain has to be different.
saneindian Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Wondering why this thread hasn't yet been merged in the mega thread?
Crookbond Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Gambhir was not the captain when we lost all those tests .Dhoni is still in the team but captain has to be different. Sehwag was captain when we lost one of those Tests. We lost it in the same manner as the other 7. If captaincy was the major issue, why was there no difference in pattern of the loss?
Muloghonto Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Sehwag as the test captain? Will be a good reward for his poor fitness, don't care a damn attitude , not to forget his wonderful form. I do not advocate giving Sehwag the captaincy, but he is our *ONLY* other option. Nobody else is a garantee in the test team except him and Dhoni for the intermediate future. You cannot give test captaincy to a person who is not a garantee for the test team in the first place.

Personally, I would bat for Tendulkar. I prefer a calm dressing room than a Jaat Buddhi one. If you want captaincy credentials from domestic cricket and IPL - why not Gambhir. Has led Delhi and KKR to titles while leading from the front in Ranji and IPL. Yeah he is not in good form over the past 2-3 years, but scored in the most recent series and if you are so big on correlations then he will perform even better as captain based on Ranji and IPL. You were expecting some kind of a miracle in one test from Sehwag where he was in charge due to a ban on Dhoni? Sehwag has to deliver in the only test he gets, but Dhoni can get away with whitewash after whitewash! Brilliant! :hysterical: You still haven't told me what's Dhoni's pedigree as a test captain?
Number Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 So SL shouldn't make Jayawardne captain outside Galle-SCG because his record is poor outside these 2 grounds. How does Dhoni do in Aus ?
NareshK Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I do not advocate giving Sehwag the captaincy, but he is our *ONLY* other option. Nobody else is a garantee in the test team except him and Dhoni for the intermediate future. You cannot give test captaincy to a person who is not a garantee for the test team in the first place. He will take Indian test team to the point of no return. :hysterical: Have you seen his fitness and attitude on the field in England series ? Singing songs in the slip position, laughing after dropping catches and jogging along like a road roller. Is this guy your choice for test captain ? Ridiculous.
saneindian Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Sehwag is a guarantee in the test spot? Except for that 100 at Ahmedabad, he has been a dud. Won't say he has been out of form but has kept throwing away his wicket in identical fashion (despite getting multiple let offs in those innings) which is worse IMO. Come the overseas tours, I am not sure if he even deserves a spot in the 15 given his recent performances in NZ SA and England. Add to that a pathetic fitness and a poor attitude.
