NareshK Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 He did not score ton of runs, he scored some runs.Jaffar with upright stance and back lift was/is always vulnerable against pacy bowlers. On his last stint with team India he simply could not put even bat on ball against Lee.That for an opening batsman is just not acceptable. We saw how Gambhir and Sehwag cracked century after century in Australia and England. They looked worse than club level batsmen in those series. :hysterical:
Cevno Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 This was the same pitch where the other side was shot out to 80 odd and also scored 140 odd in first innings. It was a tough pitch to bat on and he scored a match winning ton. Yep, agreed. His direct competitor Vijay got 4 reprieves himself this match on a way flatter track.
putrevus Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 A batsman has to be late in shot making. That's the key to playing good pace bowling. In India, on slow tracks, batsmen reach out and play shots and get away it because there is no real movement or bounce or pace. In foreign conditions, this will land them in trouble. Jaffer played well in Eng, SA, WI when there was help for bowlers but failed on some occasions and was sacked and never got back in after Sehwag, Gambhir started doing well. I think he may have done well for India if given a longer rope. he was not playing shot there, he was defending on front foot and his bat was slow in meeting ball. The late thing you are talking about is for a cut or drive on back foot which batsmen plays late to compensate for movement and bounce of ball. What Jaffar did there translates him being a sitting bunny in test cricket.

It was a tough pitch to bat on and he scored a match winning ton. Did you even watch how that ton was scored? He got at least 4-5 reprieves from the umpire. He was out in second over of Unadkat but not given. Any decent batsman will score a 100 if he is not given out even when he is out.

So you expect a batsman to not make any mistakes at all in his innings ? He will score 300 in every innings if that's the case. You cant nit pick one mistake made by a batsman and make it out to be a big flaw.

You can't hold that against him forever.
putrevus Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Away in Australia. And he was dropped after it. He did better in England than most other openers in recent times and in SA too except Gambhir. You are talking as if all other options are perfect Bradman's. The difference between England team which he played and England team of 2011 is night and day. why give older retread like Jaffar a chance when you have similar younger player in Rahane who has more upside.
rkt.india Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Who will you pick then ? Look if you h ave a 35 year old and a younger batsman and both are of same level while one has been tried unsuccessfully then I will pick a younger player because he might improve in future and become a better player. A 35 year old is just a short term plan. Some selections have been disappointing. Youngsters likes of Akshat Reddy, Manpreet Juneja and Ankit Bawne are not picked in any of the team.
NareshK Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 He moves a lot more forward since then, and that was only 1 series where Dravid looked even more clueless and late. You can't hold that against him forever. He is generally playing forward in this innings also. Sometimes a batsman could make a mistake of not going forward enough and staying back in the crease and that may get him out but that may not be a general technical flaw.

If you are going to drop 2 openers too, picking a solid experienced opener for one slot is the right strategy. He is in very good form as well. Those guys you named are not tried even at ROI level. You can't just put him in India side based on 1 season. There will be 3 openers atleast that need to be selected. Who will you select ?

Sachin also looked clueless in recent past but can you compare him to Jaffar, your comparison with Dravid is also the same. some body was comparing Jaffar with Sehwag. After 31 tests Sehwag had scored 8 hundreds to Jaffar's 5. with an average of 51 to jaffar's 34. Sehwag is once in generation player where as guys like Jaffar are plenty in India.

If GG and Viru are selected, other opener will only be made to warm the bench. He will not get a chance unless one of the two is injured or unfit to play. So, it does not make sense to pick an over the hill opener, rather pick a young guy like Jeevanjot and keep him with the team.

He could very well do a Mandeep. Anyway, the whole point is i want Sehwag and maybe Gambhir dropped.

vvvslaxman Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Rahane is bullying domestic pie chuckers on a patta

Attitude and all that is just bull, If the team is winning everything is covered and if it is losing these things come out in order to save some people their asses. Sehwag has this series to prove himself. He scored a hundred in last series. Guys like Vijay and Jaffar are a big no.Rahane is next in line if Gambhir fails in first test and Indians lose I think rahane will be in second test.
