Shreekant Wagh included in BCCI bowlers' camp

NAGPUR: Statistics don't always reveal right thing. Vidarbha pacer Shreekant Wagh is classic example of that. His stats don't suggest how talented this left-arm pacer is. However, those who have seen Wagh bowling have always rated him very high. This year national selectors Rajender Singh Hans and Saba Karim saw him bowl tirelessly on docile wickets and duly rewarded him for his hard work. The Vidarbha pacer has been included in the five-day camp for the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, Bangalore. Wagh has taken 40 wickets in the last two seasons and mostly played on wickets, which offer nothing to the pacers. However, he has often bowled his heart out. "He is certainly talented. You don't always judge the player by statistics only. We have to see which player will come good at the top level. Wagh has it in him to go distance. It's a question of showing same attitude and commitment," a selector, who doesn't wish to be named, told TOI. The 24-year-old was instrumental in Vidarbha's success for the last two years. This year Wagh not only did well with the ball but also with the bat. His 5-23 against Maharashtra came on a wicket where spinners were supposed to do all the damage. He not only took wickets but also scored crucial 31 in that match. Wagh also came good against strong Tamil Nadu picking up four wickets and then smashing an important 83 which helped Vidarbha secure the innings lead. In most of the matches, Wagh made his presence felt. Wagh is the lone cricketer from the region apart from Umesh Yadav to be retained for the IPL. He plays for Pune Warriors India. In fact, he got the Man of the Match award in his first match and also bowled well after that. However, the presence of two left-armers-Ashish Nehra and Wayne Parnell-in the squad has denied him more chances to showcase his skills. He had also been with Rajasthan Royals for one season. Recently, he was also called to bowl in Team India's nets during Mohali One-dayer. The left-armer was also on verge of selection for the U-19 World Cup in 2006 but narrowly missed out. Two years later, he played in the four-nation Emerging Trophy in Australia, representing Australian Institute of Sports in the tournament along with Varun Aaron. He was picked by the then Australia bowling coach Troy Cooley for the exchange programme between MRF Pace Academy and Centre of Excellence, Brisbane. Former India leggie and ex-national selector Narendra Hirwani too feels Wagh has improved leaps and bounds in the last couple of years. Hirwani feels Umesh Yadav's rise has helped Wagh improved as a cricketer. "I think Umesh's selection in the Indian team has also played a big role in his improvement. Sometimes when your teammate achieves great things, it gives you self-belief and confidence that you can also do the same. He is bowling quicker now and looks far more effective. He is a thinking cricketer. Wagh has performed well in the Deodhar Trophy a couple of years ago. If he can take care of his body and work hard, he has the potential," Hirwani said.

He was pretty decent when he played 2 years ago in IPL.

They should at least select the top bowlers from FC and then only go for non performers.

This guy should be ahead of lanky left arm pacer from saurashtra (can't remember the name)....i think these are the only 2 left arm pacers available in the country now

Is that a serious question? Every year we hear of these phaasht bowling camps and new phaasht boilers. You've got to be seriously optimistic to expect anything out of them.
