You need good technique too. Just slambang won't work. Sehwag's footwork has gone to dogs, look how far outside the crease Sachin was playing(Steyn was so pissed and shouted I'll smash your ****ing head) to counter late-swing and was still stretching out whenever he played on the front-foot in his innings at Capetown.

Disagree. Look at SA, in first innings they didn't apply themselves they got shot out for 250 but in 2nd innings they spent time and have almost reached the same score but lost 3 wickets only. Its all about how batsman apply themselves without having any brain-farts.

HMM poor example. South Africa were looking good always. Pakistan fielded well and took some good catches along with some good bowling too and that restricted South Africa to 253. Check the scores of all the players in first inning. They all got starts and scored in 20s or 40s. Just couldn't build up.

That said, even at his age and past his best, I guess I would prefer him at 6 in home games over third rate Test rubbish like Yuvraj and Raina.

I hope you are correct, but I fear this is a batsman in terminal decline as opposed to being in bad form only. Unlike Sachin, Dravid and Kallis, it was always going to be tough for Sehwag to recover when he approached his mid thirties because his game relies more on exceptional hand eye coordination than a watertight technique. But as I said, given our struggles to find batsmen, I don't mind giving him a run at 6 at home instead of turning back to rubbish like Yuvraj or Raina. But away from Asia I can't even see him surviving even at 6 now.

you never can be sure about that.Even Tendulkar seemed in decline in 2007 and people like Ian Chappell clearly bashed him and asked him to retire.but he made a grand comeback,didnt he? point is,a great player,specially a player like Sehwag always looks clueless and in 'terminal decline' when hes out of touch to me its a just a case of application.unlike Gambhir,who has technical issues,Sehwag looks reasonably comfortable wen hes batting and suddenly throws it away or a ball gets him.its not he scores through edges

The first three had superb techniques and even when they suffered problems in their mid thirties they could lean back on their techniques to make a comeback. Sehwag doesn't. Also, you are wrong to say that Sehwag always looks in "terminal" decline. Since late 2010 he has made only one century in Test cricket. Despite his reputation as a hit and miss player, Sehwag actually had a very consistent record before that, so there is also statistical evidence that he is not the player he once was.

again,I never said he's the same player.but hes struggles are mainly against the new ball.Thats why I want him in the middle order.Those stats are of him as an opener and I agree he shouldnt open about his technique,its not ideal,but not that bad either,especially for a MO player.to me he deserves a shot there

Measured attack is the key. Keep the good deliveries out and put the bad balls away. Just swinging at every ball is out of the question. Not attempting to score and blocking everything also spells trouble. Its easier said than done though. :P
