LUCKNOW: India paceman Praveen Kumar is in trouble after allegedly abusing an opposition player during a BCCI's Corporate Trophy match in Raipur on Monday. Agencies reported on Thursday that the incident happened after Praveen bowled a short-pitched delivery at Ajitesh Argal during the match. When Argal, playing for the Income Tax team, checked with the umpire whether it was a no ball "an angry Praveen started abusing the batsman", prompting the on-field umpires to report the incident to match referee Dhananjay Singh. It was reported that the match referee has described Praveen as "mentally unfit" to play cricket in his report to the BCCI. Anyone who has been following Praveen's career closely would hardly be surprised by his recent act of indiscipline, because this is not the first time that he has been in the news for wrong reasons. Praveen has a history of poor behaviour on the cricket field and off it. He has had street fights and altercations in his hometown of Meerut. But since those incidents were not related to cricket, they were not taken note of. After the incident in Raipur, none of his teammates or his skipper was willing to talk on the issue but they all know that he is an enigmatic personality. He can pick up a fight at the drop of the hat and lose his cool on the cricket pitch without any respect for the opponent. The UP Ranji team has also suffered due to his attitude and it was indiscipline in the team that led UPCA to sign up a coach from "outside". The new coach Venkatesh Prasad too got a taste of his indiscipline when on the last day the very first Ranji match in Ghaziabad against Delhi, Praveen missed the team bus as he had overslept after a "night out". He just about made it to the ground as the team was going in to field. Following a dressing down by the coach, Praveen, after bowling a couple of listless overs, went off the ground holding his elbow never to appear for the UP team for the rest of the season. Praveen said he had a tennis elbow and was going to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for rehabilitation. Prasad and teammates were peeved with his behaviour but did not make this incident public. It was only a source in the team management who gave the hint that all was not well with Praveen and his commitment to the team in general and his career in particular. One of his UP teammates told the TOI on condition of anonymity that PK has been frustrated ever since he was dropped from the Indian team and did not want to take the long, arduous route back by playing the tough Ranji Trophy. He aim was to get back into UP's one-day squad and play in the Hazare Trophy ahead of the new IPL season. Another teammate of his said the bags of money the IPL provides to fringe international players has gone to the head of the cricketers. And Praveen Kumar is one of them. He said that players like PK and Rudra Pratap Singh avoided the long Ranji season but would be fit for the lucrative IPL season. One of PK's teammates said: "If I could earn Rs 3-5 crore by playing 44 days of (IPL) cricket, why would I be serious about other cricket which does not even give 1/10th of that amount?" Whatever be the reason for PK's indiscipline and lack of commitment, one thing is clear - his career is going nowhere because of his attitude. And neither is he setting a good example. His former coach says that the BCCI needs to look into the issue and give an exemplary punishment before more cricketers become like Praveen Kumar.

He's now been issued a show cause notice by the BCCI and suspended from the domestic one dayers competition. Deserves a harsher punishment, hopefully a few matches ban from IPL.

"Everyone has their own emotional boundary and his may be different. He is a great competitor who speaks his mind, to coach, captain, anyone, and if you are able to take it in the right sense, it can be of benefit to the team. Handle him as a friend and you've won half the battle. He'll do anything for you on the field. On the other hand, it is very easy to needle him." Yet one UP teammate, requesting anonymity, said many were not really comfortable with him these days. "Most of the players in the dressing room are hesitant to approach him. They are not sure how he will react." Paddy Upton, who worked as a mental conditioning expert of the Indian team for three years along with coach Gary Kirsten, said there were "many fiery individuals" in the sport who, if "well-managed", could be "world beaters and seldom be problematic." The consensus is that players like Praveen, with anger management issues, need to undergo a counselling program. That's a touchy subject in a country that looks down on mental conditioning almost as a kind of weakness.

The BCCI has revoked Praveen Kumar's suspension, which he received following a violation of the players' code of conduct in a Corporate Trophy game last month. The suspension stood indefinitely and extended to all BCCI-run tournaments, but since it has now been retracted, Praveen will be able to play in the Central Zone Twenty20 tournament for Uttar Pradesh from March 17 to 22.
