SL's don't 'hate' India

Through my daily trawling of the web, I noticed many Indian cricket followers were holding a form of hatred/grudge on the Sri Lankan Cricket team. I was confused as to why my fellow brothers from other mothers hated our team so much. Was it the players they hated so much, or the fans, or the country as a whole? I wasn't so sure. Then I came across a number of incidents that may have caused this hatred. Articles with quote "Like many fellow Sri Lankans, he hated the Indian team" and also words from famous Sri Lankans such as "Cricket is a game of gentlemen, Invented by the English, Improvised by the Aussies, Mastered by the Sri Lankans, And f---ed up by you bloody Indians". The thing that many Indians don't understand is that Sri Lankans don't actually hate Indians at all. When we say we 'hate' the Indian team, we actually encourage the Indians to form a rivalry with us. Sri Lanka, and Sri Lankan people are not known to preach hate, clearly! I, as a star batsmen, admire the likes of Tendulkar and used to wish he never ever plays against us, though nowadays I don't mind so much...the point is, Sri Lanka is trying to form a healthy kind of rivalry that you see with other sides like Aus-Kiwis, Ind-Pak....and yes having realised India had already formed a rivalry with Pak has made us somewhat frustrated that we don't have a rivalry with anyone. So these days we try to hit on Pak to make you guys jealous?!?!...Anywayz, I guess its our bad too, coz we don't realise how sensitive Indians are. I've started watching YouTube videos of Indian cricket, believe it or not, and in many videos the Indians explode over little comments...*cough*Kohli-flower*cough*... The thing is, when an Indian says "India owns SL, SL were thrashed in the WC final, SL lose 90% of the time to India, If Sehwag wasn't denied that 100, he would still be playing,..." we don't really care. Sure it hurts when we lose, but it hurts more when we don't have our tea for the day or lost our fishing rod. When Sri Lankans do the same to India like "SL kicked Ind out of 2007 WC, Asia Cup final, 952-6, the last ball 6 of the Twenty20 WC quarter final, 1 billion struggling to find a XI and so on"...they take it as a huge insult, and we will never understand why... I guess we Sri Lankans need to understand that Indian cricketers have immense pressure by fans, media and also Bollywood to do really well and if they don't do well, they would figuratively be shunned by well, everyone. Being an Indian cricketer is sort of like representing the army, or being the number 1 Pop star where fans would scream or cheer louder for you than for Justin Bieber. We Sri Lankans will never understand that, and when we think we are 'having fun' with them, we are essentially 'insulting' them badly. Unless we reach 'Muralitharan' or 'Malinga' status, we would likely not understand what the lifestyle of a Pop star is like! However, as Indian cricket develops and our generation gets smarter, I'm sure Indians will soon realise we're trolling with them. Signing off, SL legendary batsmen and cricketer, Upul Tharanga

I personally dont hate any cricket team. In general i appreciate good play and have an apathy for most other teams. I have got along with many other sl fans on other cricket forums. The crux of the matter though for me is that, many sri lankan fans believe that whenever they lose to India the game was fixed and bought by the BCCI paying the SLC. If that leads to hatred or not I dont know. But based on the BBC survey of nations liking or not liking India SL, gave India a very positive opinion. 49 for and 4 against. (2005-2006) http://www.globescan.com/news_archives/bbc06-3/index.html So maybe hatred is a strong word. Maybe its just cricket.

SL fans supports Pakistan whenever there is Indo-paki match. It was very distinct in recent T20 World cup when the SL crowds roared in happiness after SA disqualified India despite loosing the game. It was evident that hate existed in tons. SL players earn $$$$ in IPL and then go behind our back supporting Pakis Also another way of thinking probably inherited from your Pakistani friends ( Masters at world conspiracy against them theories) was every match SL looses to India is fixed just like Pakis feel that they loose all their matches on their own and never get defeated. Those r root causes for hate.................Mr Tharanga ( assuming you really are the THARANGA)

Had the Mumbai 2008 attacks not happened I think most pak fans would have a different view of the BCCI. I actually remember many pak fans singing praises of the BCCI because they did tour Pakistan and many sides like Aus NZ SA and England refused. Even the pakistani players being in the IPL made many pak fans happy or atleast not hate the BCCI. Unfortunately there is not much the BCCI can do with regards to the political environment.
