One problem with him is fitness. When bowling longer spells' date= this could make the difference because if he gets tired, he may not be at his best. Hope he works on this because he is also a decent bat. Superb bowling effort in this match. :hatsoff:

Forget getting tired - even in short spells, to extract more from the pitch in overseas conditions he needs to be fit. Fitness helps to put more on the ball and also the body shape may lead to achieving drift.

Ashwin has cut out his "variation" and has stuck to classic off spin, bowling the right lengths and letting the pitch to the work. In the England series he was trying too many things which resulted in a poor line and length. I think in places like England, SA and Aus he needs to form another plan. What he has done well in this test is that he has simply put the ball in the right place. On a pitch with no assistance he may very well need his variations.

He is bowling slightly further from the stumps. He is bowling at the off stump or outside against Aus to the righties. He is also cutting down on his variations and not trying too much. BTW I can't find the one that got Clarke, that was really full.

Agree. KP and Cook both are tall guys and used their reach to great effect. They blunted the spin and turn by getting to the pitch of the ball and because our bowlers were slow in the air in comparison to what they faced in UAE against Pak in Ajmal and Rehman, they were better equipped to face our spinners who whenever tried to bowl quicker through the air erred in control.

Guys I never watched the Kolkata game and dont know why we lost or bowled poorly. Mumbai was an easier track than this Chennai pitch to bat on, its different that the Indian batters had mindfarts on seeing Panesar. Mumbai had a bit of bounce and pace and the pitch was not slow. In India most visiting team struggle only when the pitch turns and keeps low ... Mumbai wasnt low and English batsmen were good on that. I am sure that Hyderabad and Mohali will have bounce and hence even if it turns square, Aussies will find it a little easier.

The good thing about Ashwin is that he improved his length and bowled a lots of traditional stuff this innings. His carrom balls were used sparingly and most of his wickets were traditional off spinners dismissals. The guy is 13 tests old, still learning his trade, we have to hope that he turns into something good for India. The only thing we need to do as fans is reprise some faith on the bowler like Ashwin and give him a run of about 20-25 tests and see how his career pans out. He just toured Australia once where lots of great spinners have struggled (Murali has an average of 75 or something like that) and yes he did fail against England but that will be a learning experience for him. He played two weaker sides at home who aren't great players of spin and got into some bad habits as his inconsistencies were rewarded with wickets by those two sides. He was punished for the same inconsistencies by a better batting line up as England. Now he would be in a position to realize that what worked against NZ and WI will not work against other teams and he needs to be more patient against better sides, which is what we are seeing him do in the present game. In the same accord you will see him getting better overseas too. It took Kumble almost 10 years to become a decent spinner overseas and Ashwin has just played one series. He needs more time and he surely has a god chance of becoming a decent bowler for India.

Fantastic performance. Should have shared MoM with Dhoni. Liked the fact that he rarely wavered and kept the pressure on the bat every time he came to bowl.

I personally didn't see too much of a difference in the way he bowled. Its not that he bowled lots of carrom balls in the England series either . He basically has two variations, the slower top-spinnier at ~80kmph and the flatter side-spinning ball at 90 kmph. A mistake that he kept making was firing the flatter one down the right handers leg side but then and he didnt do it as much in this match but I think the difference is mainly the fact that there are a lot more mediocre left handers in the Australian side to target and more spin friendly conditions.
