Duncan Fletcher's contract extended by an year

While I am not a big fan of fletcher, I can somewhat understand why they did this. Fletcher's role was to oversee a transition period in Indian cricket, similar to what he oversaw in England in the early to mid 2000s when England lost the likes of mainstays like Stewart,Hussain,caddick,gough,thorpe and many others. England came out of there with good results for a little while. India at the moment are undergoing a transition period and it's important that the youngsters develop familiarity with the coaching structure. I would rather judge Duncan properly in a year when the youngsters have had time to fit in to this team. Contrary to what people believe, a coach's role is not to do with strategy or teaching these guys how to play. It's primarily, and especially in Indian cricket, about man management. This is where Kirsten was brilliant and Chappell was poor. A coach is more a facilitator of training and the captain is the main tactician. The reason we lost 8-0 is that the senior players didn't perform brilliantly like they have in previous away tours. It wasn't due to poor tactics or strategy. They were just getting old and up against 2 good teams on their home turf. Im not a fan of Duncan but people expecting to just drop a new coach in and expect brilliant results overseas seem to forget that it's the players themselves that are out there for 5 days.

For once Indian cricket got it right when they kicked out the main culprits for the 0-8 debacle barring the record hungry Tendulkar. This. Indian team has changed a lot since the overseas drubbing. The main problem India has always had was to make old people retire when they are nearing the end. That part has mostly happened. It is a cycle that every country has gone through recently.

When the team wins important test series or the World Cup the coaches take credit by including it in their resume and using such high profile team wins in fetching better contract by showing to employers that they are better coaches than others. Basically they take credit when team does well. so it would be double standards of them to not take responsibility for the bad performances of the team during their tenure. they cannot have it both ways. He may not be 100% responsible for the teams decline in test matches, however he has some proportion of share in it.

Problems started for him as they failed miserably in the world Cup and had a bad run in ODI's. Now that he has been given a chance instead of a decline in our test performance we hope continuity will reap some benefits for us.
