The most consistent team of IPL -- Chennai Super Kings -- Discussion thread 2013

Ok, time for some honest introspection – We got a few issues – Required – More Urgency in the batting department at the start of the innings These guys need to remind themselves that it is a T20 game, not an effin ODI. It is ok to be 10 for no loss after 3 overs if you are chasing 130 (like against Clowns XI), but anything around the 160 mark, that pace is not desirable. Irrespective of how ridiculously long your batting line up is, it is quite hard for settled batsmen to score 50-60 runs off the last 5 overs. But to expect new, incoming batsmen to just pick up the pace of the wicket, line-up the bowlers and swing away is not reasonable. It may come off some times, but other times, they are going to peter away harmlessly (like today) Out of touch batsmen – Two of the most important components of our batting – Vijay and Raina – seem very rusty. Especially Raina, who is CSK’s top-gun when it comes to batting, seems particularly listless. Maybe the working over he got from Johnson got into his head, but it is time for him to act like IPL’s all-time leading run scorer. With the batting order the way it is set up now, if Raina fails, he is immediately followed by the comparatively circumspect Badri, which typically tends to exacerbate the situation. MSD cannot walk every single game with his team needing 60 off 5. Botched batting order – Bottom line – the lowest MSD can bat is 5. He is simply too good a manipulator of the strike/reader of the situation to come in after a hit-or-miss like Jadeja. It is like a bike ride wearing a helmet, but having an insurance policy anyway. MSD needs to be the helmet and Jadeja the insurance policy and not the other way around. In all of his IPL history (and we have had the chance to see him for nearly 6 years now), Jadeja has never been and will not be clean striker. He cannot bat above MSD. Spin to win– For some reason, the bowling unit seems to have evolved from a predominantly spin attack in its heydays (2010 – 2011) to a predominantly fast medium attack. At our peak times, CSK spin attack was relentless against opposition batsmen. Aswhin would open the bowling, followed by Murali and Jakati after the power plays, with even Raina chipping in with a few overs. Now, its mostly Ashwin, Jadeja with a couple of overs and rest of seam. The team needs to redress the tilt towards pace bowling and go back to their winning formula of having a equal split b/w pace and spin. Death bowling – Last two games, opposition batsmen have really caned our pacers to score bountiful of runs in the death. Dirk Nannes is nowhere near as menacing with the old ball as he is with the new. And the go-to bowler for MSD in the death, Bravo, simply does not have enough control to consistently keep the runs down. Their combined 8 overs today went for 77 runs Remedies – 1) Leave out of one of Albie or Bravo for Jakati – Have faith that your top 8 batsmen can win you a T20 game. There’s no point going into a game with 4 all-rounders. That is just a waste of talent. 2) No matter what the game situation, lock MSD batting position at no.5 3) On winning the toss, bat first. CSK is hands down THE best team when it comes to defending medium to large sized totals. With the exception of last year’s finals, you will rarely find teams chasing down substantial targets against CSK. Their hands down best fielding unit makes it near impossible for opposition batsmen to go on any sort of extended run. The constant pressure of chasing seems to be wearing some of the batsmen down. For example, Bravo’s batting tends to express itself better when batting first, as opposed to chasing. 4) Redress the balance back towards spin – The split should desirably be 12 overs to 8 between spin and pace (and not the other way around like it was today) 5) Try Hilfenhaus in place of Nannes. He may not have the pace of Nannes, but he’s a better death bowlers than Nannes is.

I dont know why Morkel was selected' date=' especially if he wasnt going to bowl. He replaced Hussey which makes his play as a proper bat yet he came so low down the order :headshake:[/quote'] Bong owner bought out Chennai on the occasion of Bengali New Year :agree:

Ok, time for some honest introspection – We got a few issues – Totally agreed. i also feel it didn't make sense to drop Hussey for Morkel but as Dhoni mentioned at the toss, they might be trying some things out against a weaker team which backfired for us. We also have way too many all rounders. Jadeja,Morkel,Bravo, Morris, Ashwin - that's 5 ARs. I think only two of Morris/Bravo/Morkel should be played and on current form, Morris has to have a spot. Its between Bravo and Morkel. And if Morkel is not bowling and coming out at 8, then its better to have Bravo. Raina did play well against RCB, just a bit out of touch maybe, but I think he'll be fine as the tournament progresses. We need to wait for Faf now, to strengthen the top order. I do believe if Hussey played yesterday, we would have definitely got closer. That was a howler to send Sir Jaddu in ahead of Dhoni. Maybe because of his batting against RCB, Dhoni trusted him. Dhoni has to come in at 4, and if not 4, then 5. Anything lower than that means Dhoni doesn't have the control over the match. The problem with sending in Badri ahead of Dhoni is, that Badri will more often than not take the Req RR from around 8 to 11-12. Then guys like Dhoni/Bravo/Jaddu have to come in with the team requiring 100 off 9 overs or something like that. Though Dhoni's finishing rate is awesome, he still can't do it in 4 matches in a row. Yeah. And Jadeja is not that effective with the new ball as we saw yesterday. Ashwin has to bowl with the new ball in the PP overs as that's the way we have always rolled in previous seasons. Maybe we should bring in Baba Aparajith for Rajpoot/Mohit. Bravo shouldn't be bowling at the death. I feel Nannes should be our option for the death overs. Laughlin looked like a good death bowler but then we have to play only 4 overseas players. Maybe we should drop Morkel for Laughlin. We can play Hussey, Morris, Nannes, Laughlin. But that would be a risk and we wouldn't have that much depth in batting. 1) Maybe we can try Baba instead of Jakat. But yeah, one of Albie/Bravo has to go. 2) Can't agree more. I would even drop down Badri and bat MSD at 4. 3) True. But then we have got to win the toss as well! We should never chase with the no. of out of form batsmen we have. 4) True. Ashwin, Jadeja, Baba, Raina - These 4 should be bowling at least 10 overs combined at least on the Chepauk track. 5) Not really. Nannes is a very good T20 bowler and he will soon find his rhythm. And even if I have to drop him for anyone, it would be Laughlin because Hilfy is not great at the death.

Raina is especially going to be a big worry. Its going to be fun to watch him and Vijay bat on that Rajasthan or even Hyderabad pitch. Even Mumbai are going to prepare a pace bowlers paradise and let Malinga and Johnson fire out the CSK top order. As i have said before, the pitches in this years ipl by far have been bowler (pace bowler especially) friendly. Maybe CSK needs Faf and Hussey at the top with Morkel (who will also bowl) and Morris down the order. Bravo is a wicket taker but is too expensive. No point taking 2/44 in 4 overs.

Ram- there is a lot of over reactions based on one match. Using your logic, they had the best bowling, batting attack last week after they played KXIP. They still have a great team and imo, they become complecant the other night. They cannot leave it late and win matches. They learnt that yesterday and they are good enough to correct that.

CSK falling into the same crap strategy once again; Do not hit for 1st 15 overs. A batting line up with Morkel coming in at 8, does not need to lose only 2 or 3 wickets by the 12th over mark. It could afford to take more risks at the start. It is not ok for both openers to eat a few deliveries at the start. One or both need to take more risks. Husseys 4 off 15 against the RCB cost us the game (nearly). What is Bravos role? He is more hit and miss compared to morkel and i am not convinced he is a good 5th bowler. Morkel should take over as the 5th bowler with Hilfenhaus replacing bravo. Open with Anirudha, who atleast wont last long if he is not doing well in the middle. Why isnt Raina bowling? Too much dependence on bravo who is always expensive.
