You cannot give him credit for picking Dhawan. The selectors had to drop Sehwag from the team so that Dhawan could get a chance. Dhoni had no option. Vijay too was not much of an option, he was the only other opener available. Jadeja is a good selection. I always wanted Jadeja in the test team and Dhoni picked him right away.

LOL - You can't have your cake and eat it too. According to you Rahane was an OPTION (I think you need to check the definition of this term in the dictionary). Dhoni decided not to use that as an OPTION but go for Dhawan. Therefore, Dhoni deserves credit for making the pick of both Vijay (since apparently he is bashed for other selections like Vinay Kumar etc.) and Dhawan. Either this OR Rahane was not an option at all in which case you have to agree that Rahane is not an opener and Dhoni is not at fault for Rahane not playing. Lets see which part of the humble pie will you swallow.

That is because Sehwag was there and most captains would pick players who have experience of playing tests first and once they fail, only then, they would be inclined to pick other options.

You are talking as if Dhoni had absolutely no say in selection. Could be Sehwag was dropped because Dhoni wanted a younger option, without the burden of critics hounding him for dropping Sehwag.

Fallacies ... fallacies! Yes - Dhawan was an option and Dhoni ignored him. You can call him out for it - I wouldn't really mind. But note Dhawan was not in the squad for the first 2 Tests. The problem I had was of "inconsistency" which I pointed out. Either you say Rahane was an opener or not. Once Rahane is an opener, Dhoni must be credited with selecting Dhawan. If Rahane is not, you can't blame Dhoni for not picking Rahane in the team. What do you think? Was Rahane an opener or wasn't he? I didn't mean to get offensive in any way so. I would appreciate a little bit of research before posting something like that. Obviously, you have got your facts wrong. You think that Dhawan was brought into the team only when Sehwag was dropped. That is not the case. He was in the squad for the first 3 tests and only provided an opportunity when the selectors decided to drop Sehwag. By your twisted logic, Dhawan was an option for the first 2 tests and ignored by Dhoni. As a result, you cannot give Dhoni credit for playing him in the team since the only reason he picked Dhawan was due to intervention by the selection committee. Nobody wants to give them any credit for that.

Fair enough. I will keep that in mind for future interactions. I have accepted I was wrong on Dhawan's selection - check Post #192. That was before the quoted post above. Not the first time I'm wrong, not the last time either. May I have an answer about Rahane as an opener?

Now that is hindsight. 1. At Lords' India entered the series as the number 1 side with Tendulkar, Laxman, and Dravid all in great form. India conceded a 188 runs lead and had England 60/5 in the second innings. Wouldn't you have backed India to chase 300-320 runs as the number 1 team on a good pitch? The pitch was good enough for India to get to 270 anyway with Raina scoring 80. 2. At Trent Bridge, wouldn't you have backed India to chase 300 runs in the last innings when the pitch had eased out and India had scored 270 runs in the previous two innings? Didn't the number 1 team make a similar comeback in Durban? Using the future results in Australia to explain England makes no sense.

Because our bowling and batting out there needed more bashing than his captaincy. And I agree with most of your posts. Losing 8 series away and losing a series at home and still letting him lead the side is an absolute blunder. No country would ever do that. I would have sacked him blind folder after the Aus tour.

I can show you numerous posts of mine criticizing the batting and bowling. Then everyone agrees, but when I criticize kaptaani Dhoni fanboys start throwing in red herrings of batting and bowling. I am not calling you one, but the way you brought up batting and bowling in a discussion of kaptaani made you act like one. You want me to help out to find the posts where I have criticized bowling and batting?

Before you go overboard I just want to let you know I am no bhakt by any means. There are issues with his captaincy and keeping (sometimes) which you make it sound much worse, his keeping i.e.

Coming to his keeping, he was horrible on those tours. Spilled two clear chances just in the Lords' test when we had lost a bowler and needed to make a good start to the tour. After he was struggling against the swinging ball he started standing too far back. Don't you remember the number of edges which fell short of the slips off Praveen Kumar? Who is to blame there? Batting and bowling? He continued the same crap in Australia and edges fell short of the slips at Perth of all fracking places in the world. I remember multiple occasions when the ball has gone between him and first slip. That is just unacceptable for any keeper. That's a fundamental of wicket keeping - the keeper is always supposed to attempt anything between him and first slip because he has the gloves. Who is to blame here? Batting and bowling?
