Is Unmukt Chand over-hyped or pure genius?

  1. 1.

    • Over-hyped. Decent batsman, but there are others who are equally good/better
    • Not good at all
    • Genius! Better than any other young batsman in India

First, let me get this straight - I am NOT criticizing him. There has been a lot of talk about him since he played that match-winning knock in the final of the U-19 World Cup. I watched highlights of that innings and was very impressed with the effortless ease with which he hit the quick bowlers for sixes. However, if we look at his record in domestic cricket so far, it is very ordinary. Avg below 40 in FC cricket. Avg below 40 and SR below 70 in List A cricket (on flat tracks in India) Avg below 20 in T20. (I don't personally care about this particular avg) Which brings me to the question that I have posted. Is he the genius that everyone (including Ian Chappell) is touting him to be or is he just over-hyped? Think of this keeping in mind other young batting talents in the country who don't even get half the attention (people like Manprit Juneja) despite having made great starts to their domestic careers.

He looks like he has a few technical issues. He looks very vulnerable out at the crease early on in his innings, but still early days for him, he can only get better from here./ The more he plays, the better he will get :nice:

Too early to tell anything
But he's already made it to the probables list for the Champions Trophy and is often spoken off as the next in line opener in Tests after Dhawan and Vijay.

Delhi doesn't have flat wkts in Ranji. so to dismiss his ve 40 ad on flat wkts is not correct IMO Also he wasn't just spoken because of the u-19 wc final 100. He scored match winning knocks in the quadrangular series semi and final and then in the quadrangular series in Hyderabad and also 100s in semi and final of Asia cup. He just confirmed his credentials and ability with that century wc final . As for IPL , he just needs time IMO not everyone succeeds at the first go. He also performed very well in domestic ODIs and inter zone ODI tournament . So there shouldn't be any complaints over his selection in probable a list . Deserves it definitely. Cant see him breaking into the test team in near future but think should be blooded into the ODI team sooner

Disagree with that. Delhi has flat wickets that start offering turn pretty soon in the match. In the Ranji Trophy this year, Delhi got a number of 500+ scores playing in Delhi. Besides, an average below 40 is still pretty poor in a country where domestic batsmen often average more than 50 and in many cases even more than 60.

Loll at you all calling him slogger n weak in technique based on his 2 ipl innings. Watch u-19 final where ball was moving, seaming and swinging more than Sharne Warne's spin.. He played all those140+ bowlers with ease whereas all other Indian n Austrlian player had no clue about batting. Also check his stats at IndiaA tour in NZ on seaming wickets where he got a century. Lets not even go to QuadranguIar series between India, England, Aus and NZ where he single handedly won us the trophy by scoring centuries in semis and finals. I am telling you, this kid is a genius. Just don't mock him or do name calling.

Thanks and this too. Indian cricket fans are so typical. 2 innings n he is a weak player and can't at start of the innings.

Well, everybody is entitled to their opinions. BTW, I don't personally think that he is a slogger.

Pure Genius!.Just Remember he won us the WC in Aus (Singlehandedly) not in SC conditions "To do easily what is difficult for others is the mark of talent. To do what is impossible for talent is the mark of genius. " — Henri-Frédéric Amiel

None of the choices. He is just a young man with some raw talent. But as usual, we have pre matured orgasm. Needs 2-3 years to be ready for international level.
This. He is looking very tentative and nervous at the start. They should try him in middle order.

First of all let him play ranji for 2 seasons. If he is extraordinary he will break into team early. There r many more deserving players ahead of him

Neither over hyped nor a genius. Just a very good talented youngster. Back to back domestic T20 00s, 100 in the Vijay Hazare final, twin 50s in Deodhar Trophy- there have been very good performances in the shorter formats and hence the name in 30 probables. Yuvraj, Kaif, Raina all came to the national side despite average FC/List A records. Its good for Unmukt that he isn't being fast tracked, needs another season of FC cricket with some A tours to be ready for international cricket.
