Draft system is a poor system, and if one has seen the SLPL, then he will understand that the draft system is flawed. I remember that 1 team in the SLPL had tamim,jaya, chandimal, kamran,umar,hafeez,azhar mahmood, colin ingram, brad hogg and one team had brendan taylor as their only quality overseas player and locals were murali, mubarak..end of story
So many luggage players. :hysterical::hysterical:

Nope..Its just that IPL 1 and IPL 4 started with 3 year contracts' date=' as that was the mandatory period. So every 3 years, all the contracts end and hence most of the players will be put back into the auction. [b']There should be a retention system in place. It makes no sense to disturb your core every 3 years.
No one is forcing you to change the core. If a franchise wants a certain player they have the option of retaining him by bidding in the auction.

Why should teams and fans be forced to change and support different players every three years. No other franchise sport does that. So just retain all the players who are willing to remain just like in any sport

Huh? Who is forcing you to change? The franchise can choose to stick with the same squad in the bidding.

Auction causes irrational overbidding which is why you see all these BS prices. Few things needed in the IPL to make it more professional: 1. No auctions, move to a draft system. Everyone who is unsigned goes into a draft. Teams pick in the reverse order of previous season's standing like the NBA, NFL etc. 2. Current teams should have first right of refusal (able to sign a player to a mutually agreed amount) before a player is put back in the draft 3. Have a clear hard salary cap which can't be circumvented by underhand deals and extra ad money and hidden tie breakers 4. Also have cap on individual player salaries based on experience etc so one player doesn't hog the entire payroll
This is the only logical process, there is no second option unless you wanna follow a brand new team with the same name. Its a absolute joke people think its still ok to go ahead with the auction system. I though it was embarrassing when they did it again in 2011, but doing it again is just greed and corruption at its best.

If you keep changing all the players, you will completely lose your fan base. There is no point in following these teams anymore. Dumb feckers dont know how to run this whole thing. :mad: Dalit Modi was way better.
+100. As it is viewership is dropping. The franchises are not yet established enough to function without star players. But then again with all the new teams who knows. Pune, Punjab, Sunrisers, Rajasthan all have no established names. You could change their entire lineup and no one would bat an eyelid. With Sehwag playing as awfully as he currently is and should that continue through this season I doubt Delhi fans would care too much weather he stays or goes. So it's really just Kohli, Tendukar, Gayle, Dhoni,Raina and to an extent Gambhir(although I think KKR fans and their CM wld really be depressed if SRK let's go of the team) who are kinda embedded into their current teams. To a lesser extent Bisla, Vijay are also players we kinda associate with certain teams. But I doubt they are relevant enough to retain merely from a fan-base point of view.

Huh? Why should there be a wholesale auction in the first place?
Because those were the rules initially set in place before mafias Srini and Ambani modified them to suit their needs and the new additions to the league were disadvantaged as a result.

They can always outbid the outbid.
Tough ask if ur retaining players like Dhoni+ Raina+Jaddu+Vijay+Hussey+Badri+Ashwin+Faf du Plessis + Bravo That said the teams with the deepest pockets Chennai and Mumbai will have to spend the most retaining their star players. For the rest it's even-stevens.

No that was a rule created by Modi to satisfy his needs and have new teams that support him.There was no law when IPL started that 2 new teams will be added or fresh new auctions will be conducted every three years. If anything adding 2 new teams without any thought process unilaterally was to be blamed not for teams who invested in their team when IPL started and marketed their brand and protecting it. Also there are no rule in IPL that says a wholesale auction should take place next year either.

Don't know about every three years but the initial condition was that a fresh auction will be held after 3 years which was slyly avoided by Srini and Ambani.

Lalit Modi introduced the rule of fresh action every three years. He wanted ALL the players to go into the auction, but the mafia men twisted the rule to suit their needs - 4 players (max. 3 Indians) retained per team. I say, just have one final auction with ALL the players in it. Don't add any new franchises. :orderorder:

Well tough luck for Srini and Ambani. Anyhow, it's not going to happen because these two teams form the rules of the league and do whatever suits them right from the retention of players at the three year auction, to allowing 5 foreign players, to excluding players of a nationality from playing in their city. For those complaining about auctions and comparing to other foreign leagues can you tell me one foreign league where rules are turned into jokes like in IPL?
