The openers have put together two half-century stands, but thrice the team has lost its first wicket in the first over. Ponting has scored 52 runs in five innings and Tendulkar 69. Asked about Tendulkar's batting form, Ponting said it has been "no different than mine". Mumbai Indians made another false start against Rajasthan Royals in a chase of 180 as the openers were out early - Tendulkar in the first over and Ponting in the third - to offspinner Ajit Chandila. "The two guys at the top of the order haven't done the job required off them by the team," Ponting said. "We are five games into the tournament; both of us need to play better. If we want to continue winning games and if we want to be the team at the end of it that holds the trophy up, then you need everyone in the team performing more often than not. Neither of us has played as well as we would have liked. I'd expect a lot from myself from the first few games compared to what I have delivered."

G_B_ Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 atleast he is not making excuses...... the thing is though, i seriously question if ponting can play in indian conditions. Maybe at the peak of his powers. But he has been below par in India throughout his career. Yesterday, sachin got out going for a shot. Ponting actually was badly struggling before his tame dismissal. From my reading of the situation Sachin is a few innings away from a big one. Cant see ponting doing well at all. Open with rohit and move Ponting to number 4.

His 'big' one will use maximum overs out of the 20 available.. We don't need a BIG one from the openers.. All we need is 45-50 runs from 6 PP overs. If the openers can do this in most of the matches, it'll be great. :((

If the openers can do this in most of the matches, it'll be great. :(( he actually has a strike rate of 130 this season and has looked aggressive even if he has got out early quite a few times.

Look at Rajasthan yesterday, Rahane is anchor and Watson is the attacker. There is perfect yin and yang. Everybody knows each others role. Rahane takes singles to give Watson most of the strike in the first 6. Watson takes the risks. With sachin and ponting, the question is who is the aggressor? and who plays the role of anchor? Sachin is better off opening with Dwyane Smith as then there is a clear role for him to fulfill.

NareshK Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Sachin has scored runs for MI in the past and has done well on a couple of occasions this season too. That quick fire 44 is a good example. Also, his presence brings in tens of thousands of people into stadiums and brings in millions of tv viewers at home which is a very important factor. Never underestimate HIS fandom. Ponting is the captain, so he will stay and he cant bat anywhere other than as an opener. He is too slow to be a middle order batsman in T20. So for better or worse, MI is stuck with its openers. :P
