Well let's not even get into the sad legacy of Indian fast bowlers bar 2 or 3 but did the era from 2000-2010 produced the best seam bowling compared to our standards in the past the debate always seems to be why do Indian bowlers fizzle out after 1-2 good series but the bigger picture is how come we produced atleast those bowlers from 2000 onwards compared to any of the previous eras. Was it Ganguly,MRF Pace Foundation,Chappell,Wright,BCCI,Vengsarkar or any other selector who preceeded or followed him during this phase I mean yes most if not all of them sucked after 1-2 good series but still they were better than most of the seam bowlers we had in the 80's,90's or even before that. Don't want this thread to become a feast for trolls but look at the decent talent who have helped us in important tests and tournaments. R.P.Singh,Sreeshanth,Irfan Pathan,Munaf Patel,Ishant,P.K....Zak,Nehra(even though they debuted in late 90's I think) It's a different story that they were mis-managed but may be it's a good sign that the coaching atleast at the grass-root level for seam bowling has improved...I mean Sreeshanth or ishant over Ghavri any day right?.

Which decent Indian fast bowlers are you talking about? Munaf, Irfan, Dinda, Vinny, Pishu, Praveen, Sir Rudra, etc? The only one that comes to memory is Zaheer Khan. He was probably the only decent fast bowler that consistently bowled in upper 130s and rarely in low 140s. Unless if you are referring to Sir Jaddu :hatsoff:

an even more interesting thread would be about INdia produced so many fast bowlers in that era and none managed to make a long lasting impact. The answer though could easily be attributed to India's over-obsession with batsmen and their idolization

Well there is a definite improvement in pace compared to the 90's crop of fast bowlers, for india to find good fast bowler's the north indian clan need to step up, the punjabi & pahadi lads especially, tall and well built...the only genuine fast bowler india has ever produced was a young javagal srinath, In the current crop, umesh, aaron, shami, all have shown promise.

If you are comparing with the bowlers in the pre-90s era, then yes, there is marked improvement now. I don't think it's ended in the last decade. The bowlers now are also better than what we had then. Of course except for some exceptions like Kapil, Nissar and Amar Singh

Nobody is better than Kapil dev. Zak vs Srinath.. more or less equal. You should compare with what other countries produce not with what we produced in the 80s, 90s. Top 50 bowling averages among pacers post 2000. India has two guys in that (min 25 wickets).. P Kumar 25.81. Srinath 31.13. 2nhkh0x.png

I think it is a slow process. We had nothing before 2000s. In 2000s, we started producing more half decent pacers. Hopefully, next generations will get better.

No. We cannot because we are only competing with ours right now. Other countries have history of producing fast bowlers for last 100 years. We don't. Our aim should be how we can better our history. Our new bowlers may not surpass Kapil, but aim should be to get more number of bowlers like Zak and Srinath. We had Kapil but little support. We had Srinath but little support form other pacers. We had Zak but he got better support from others at least periodically from one or other bowler. We need bowlers like Zak or Srinath playing together in a same team as a unit so that they can lend support to each other. Even this, we are lacking.

MRF pace academy had a huge role to play with TA Sekar looking after its day to day running. Till the Dalmiya group was in power, BCCI used to work closely with MRF. But post 2005, some joker decided to bring everything under NCA's control and MRF stopped being in the mainstream. Also, BCCI's successful TRDO program helped identify talent from lesser known areas/teams and send them for proper coaching. Another excellent program ruined by the present dispensation ruling the BCCI.

VVS I am not talking about the main bowlers like Kapil,Srinath or Zak...I am talking about the Pool of bowlers they had as a support. In 90's and 80's our seam bowling looked like a joke without Srinath or Kapil respectively but post 2000 we won a few tests or produced terrific performances even without Zak who was our stand out bowler for the decade...We had different bowlers shine across various series Like Sree in S.A on 2 seperate occasions,RP in Eng,Pathan in Pak,Munaf in WI,PK in England,Ishant against Aus

I don't disagree we had more one-off performances from our fast bowlers than in the 90s. Infact 80s produced better fast bowlers for India than the 90s. Binny , chetan, madanlal atleast had their moments. You could put that down to transition. Also i would blame Wadekar/Azhar combo who were influential in preparing dust bowls tailor made for Kumble. Hardly there was any encouragement to take up fast bowling. But saying that these are world class bowlers.. is over the top. Most of the bowlers had one or two good innings. None of them developed and went on to lead a bowling attack. Even in the 90s among the top 50 in terms of averages you could see 3 bowlers. But in the last 13 years only 2 Indian bowlers are in the top 50. Yea.. we produced more one off support fast bowlers? So what? Doesn't mean much.
