Illegal betting is a problem. The money for these is funded from the underworld who in turn want to make more money. This drives bookies to fix matches; so that they can con the small timers and make money on results depending on the odds of the matches. Anyways, legalizing betting is not a panacea but will help reduce some burden on the system. It will also bring in more accountability. For example, in the current spot fixing case the maximum penalty that the RR players face is life bans and/or suspensions (unless the franchisees file cases in court). Jail terms may be served only if player conduct during court sessions are not at the best behavior etc. (which is practically ruled out due to lawyers hired) and at best such jail terms will be very small. Now, if you had legalized betting there could have been far serious implications on the players as they can then be guilty of multiple fraud counts (not just the franchisee). In the end, your argument about "driving people to poverty" is out of place. Legalizing is NOT an encouragement to indulge in betting. It just means declaring to the state the details of your bet so that the government keeps a tab on activities. Of course, if you are found gaming the system you are as good as dead meat. But having said all the above, India as we stand are not ready from a pragmatic point of view to legalize betting owing to extrinsic factors. Theoretically, legalizing betting should not be an issue.

I agree partly on the thoughts, but to get it working in the clean way that even those who fancy the idea of legalized betting would want , is very difficult. That's the issue. Betting companies can't be held for enticing better, however, the notion of easy money will attract many for sure. The other drawback of betting is that, cricketers can let their relatives or friends know that they will get out below 50. They will bet on their behalf and earn huge. Nobody will be able to crack it. So the laws even if designed soon , would be useless as the crime itself will be unnoticed.

12.32 pm Delhi Police to produce arrested players including Rajasthan Royals‘ and former India player S Sreesanth in court today. The police is unlikely to seek extension of custody for the player. The Police will also be producing the arrested bookies in court today and could ask for an extension of the custody of bookies.

Depends on which stream of information you follow....the leaking of information has made sure that information hasn't been highly filtered....and who are these big guns being protected?? BCCI holding series of meetings but body chief N Srinivasan remains defiant and says he will not step down. Srinivasan is expected to hold a press conference at 4 pm. It appears that Srinivasan’s legal team was also present during BCCI’s meeting. Board members are not happy with his decision, according to reports.

All in all it doesn't look very professional and is bound to raise suspicions.

And even the police themselves have admitted that they have made some mistakes and it could have been handled much better.

The Tour Programme and Fixtures Committee of the BCCI met in Kolkata earlier today, to discuss and confirm the venues during Australia’s tour of India in October-November 2013. India and Australia will play seven ODIs and one T20 International, from 10 October 2013 to 2 November 2013. The ODIs will be played at the following venues: Bengaluru, Pune, Mohali, Nagpur, Jaipur, Ranchi, Cuttack. Rajkot will host the lone T20 International. The exact dates and sequence will be announced later.
