JourneyMan Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 The way Jaddu and Ashwin are going it's going to be hard to deny them a place in the team. Amit Mishra also has a strong argument for being in the side. As much as I like Bhajji, I don't know if there's a spot for him.

He still mystifies batsmen. Their combination just works great. Bhajji at the most inopportune moments would bowl 5 wides down the leg side. His whole game plan is to dart and dart so that batsmen can't hit him. Yuvraj outbowled him in the world cup because of this approach.
sherpatenzig Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 His nos are as good as Ashwin's in 50/20 overs. For someone to say Ashwin is light years ahead is nothing but joke. As far as Chawla is concerned he should play this weekend, he has earned the right moreover in Semi's India needs to play 3 spinners against England irrespective of the conditions.
ravishingravi Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I want Bedade, Khurasia, Devang Gandhi and Siddiqui back.

Ashwin has done nothing in ODIs (T20s as well) and there's no reason why he should have a permanent spot in the ODI side. Bhajji may not be his replacement, but we need to try out other spinners as well if Ashwin's mediocre ODI bowling continues.

I know it is a small sample. But Ashwin despite his recent poor form looks more potent than Bhajji. Infact lot more spinners. Don't go by IPL where he had guys like Malinga, Johnson, Ojha to make things easy for him. It is hardly an indicator that he bowled well there. He was still darting there. At the international level Harbhajan is the least threatening spinner from India in recent times. Mishra is far better than him. Don't forget Ashwin is in top 10 ICC ranking. You don't get there without semblance of consistency. Guys like Rasool should still be on the radar before even going back to Bhajji ala Pakistan style.
saneindian Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 What do these stats prove? That Bhajji was bowling poorly and Ashwin was on an upswing, that was 2 years ago. Precisely the reason why Bhajji lost his spot in the side. However after early promise, Ashwin has stagnated in the shorter formats in the last 12-15 months. After nearly 50 ODIs now, he's yet to pick a 4-fer forget a 5-er. And please, I have not even talked about IPL in any of my posts. All I am pointing to is Ashwin has been as mediocre as Bhajji was before losing his spot and unless Ash improves his ODI bowling, he should not have a permanent spot in ODIs and T20s.

But on what basis we should go back to Bhajji. What has he done in the meanwhile? Failed in Deodhar trophy last year. Failed in Vijay Hazare last year. Failed ihis year Ranji Trophy. This year Vijay Hazare Trophy he didn't play. So essentially it is an IPL based call. I would pay attention to other spinners.

vvvslaxman Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 ^ His wicket taking skills have gone down a bit.. probably trying too much variations. But he still maintains okay ER. Don't think they will throw him out of the team considering how he performed against Australia. Also his batting is real handy. Unless someone is far superior they won't risk at this point. If at all he is rested he will be replaced by a seamer not a spinner.
StriKe Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 ^ Don't take it very seriously..i want back players posts were reply to OP :cantstop:
Silva Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 To be honest their are probably a lot of indian bowlers who can do what ashwin has done so far in ODIs but probably none that can do a lot better. Its the same problem we have with fast bowlers. If all of our fast bowlers were kicked out of the team the next 3 that replace them won't be much better or much worse. A lot of depth but nobody that's world class. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?bowling_pacespin=2;class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=wickets;spanmin1=14+Jun+2009;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=bowling The only reason ashwin is the number one option is his age. And the fact that Yuvraj and jadeja are both lefties. which are probably good enough reasons IMO.
div Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 comparing economy rates? Ashwin used to bowl 5-6 overs inside the power plays. Two new balls Other ODI rules In experienced pace bowlers. Overall Ashwin is better ODI bowler and Bhajji is better T20 bowler.
sherpatenzig Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Ashwin has had his Mendis moment and now people have enough footage of him to understand his bowling. Not much separates the two. What people refer to as darts are nothing but an optimum flight path to reduce the runs one can score. Does that get him wkts, clesrly not but it sure minimizes scoring shots. Look at the last world cup and see his figures before rubbishing him.
