Bounced ball travels faster than direct throw...

I realize that.....one bounce is easier for keepers to gather and effect a run-out......I'm just saying that the notion that bouncing the ball makes it go faster is rather silly.....
I get what you're trying to say but I don't think "fast" meant speed to the WK. I think it more meant about ability to afflict a faster run out which has other parameters than ball speed.

Guys, a bounced ball does not travel faster according to the laws of physics. What he means here is that it's easier to impart more force on a ball when throwing it flatter on the bounce than launching it high in the air for it to reach directly. And that's right..

His assumption is wrong. What effects speed more is if the throw is flatter or if it has a high trajectory. High trajectory means the speed is less, flatter means quicker. Bouncing the ball always reduces the speed. Best throw is a flat throw without a bounce.

Why outlaw full toss aimed at the head when two bouncers are permitted every over??
Not even remotely connected. If you have played cricket, you will know that a full toss above eye level is a dangerous delivery even by a medium pace or slow bowler. A batsmen looks down from the bowler's delivery arm and when the ball goes above that line of sight, without bouncing, you lose it for a moment. That's why full tosses can be lethal, there is no way any batsman can pick up a head high full toss by a fast bowler

We must note - that when cricketers say it is "faster"; it would be faster to effect the run-out and not necessarily fast as in speed.

Now I have seen all. People agreeing to the fact that a bounce ball travels faster than a direct throw.. :hysterical::hysterical: seriously.. some people just have to have a different view point. Their objective seems to be being different than correct.

In D/N games if you are fielding in the night, one should ALWAYS throw one bounce as there is a possibility of losing the ball in the lights otherwise.

It makes sense as ball is much easier to collect and comes at height which is perfect to effect run outs If u throw directly it might be bit quicker but its much harder to judge height of ball and collecting it is much harder..

The reason he stated is comical. But bouncer throws are preferred throws than overhead throw . Unless you can effect flat throw in full (not many can do that) long, high full throws will take a longer trajectory.

Its kinda of common sense that the ball looses significant speed after it bounces. Does this guy really think that tennis player's are playing serves at greater speeds than 130 mph? Or cricket players are playing deliverers at 70 mph+ that are pitched on a good length? the ball slows down a lot by the time they play the shot.

Actually while fielding, I found that I could throw a ball faster to the keeper on the bounce than direct. It's almost impossible to throw direct from a distance flat to the keeper. For that usually you have to throw upwards in an arc which is pretty slow. When you throw into the ground, you can use more of your arm strength and hence it might be faster

I know that and I had mentioned benefits of bounced throw in my previous post. My comment was on the way this reason has been conveyed, sounds absolutely absurd.

The only way a bounced ball gains speed after pitching is if you bowl/throw a top spinner. Otherwise, it doesnt get from point A to point B faster. Bounced balls can affect run-outs faster though. That is because all bounced balls (if bounced properly) are collected by the wicketkeeper at lower than wicket level and to effect a run-out, they have to simply follow through with their body momentum from gathering the ball low to rising up with it. Direct throws are difficult to make at stump level or lower and any throw at higher than stump level can take longer to affect a run-out, as the wicketkeeper is gathering above the stumps and has to check his body momentum (which is still on the rise) instead of working with it and has to bring his hands down to the stumps. obviously, a direct throw at stump level or lower is the fastest way to affect a run-out. This is why you see direct low throws from the close in fielders and bounced balls comming back from the deep. This is because it is extremely hard to throw a low direct throw from the deep and if third man is returning the ball directly to the keeper, he is better off bouncing it to the keeper than making the keeper collect overhead.
