She sees a man, recognizes him, is about to scream his name when, "a kitchen knife plunged into her heart". It never says that the man did it. The man could have a companion. My doubts are definitely with the neighbor woman where the father, the ex and the boss are simple distractions for the readers.

How come Martha, who had to steal 31 dollars from her old job and has been jobless for quite sometime, has an apartment in such a place with paper-thin walls where door sounds and shower sounds can be heard from the next apartment?

Theres really no hard data to prove that the father did it. Besides you are relying on the information provided by the neighbor. I think this story is a figment of JAF's imagination.

Of course, this is a reasonable guess and not conclusive.
