The reason why SA have done well in India is because they play such passive aggressive game. They are not dominating and will never be - irrespective of whether they have a good team or not.
never will be ? how do u know ? they almost white washed england in england white washed pakistan just few months ago only problemwas they lost some home games before but they seem to be improving even that. dont even australia whitewashed team away from home.. at home they were unbeatable:nervous:

I made that prediction because their current style of play won't change and it hasn't really changed over the years. They are bullies against teams like Pakistan but if you give them minimal resistance they retreat back to their den. The did not almost white wash England - they were on the back foot in the 2nd Test match. The same in Australia, same in New Zealand as well - some resistance and they are off. SA will always play safe and ironically this is the reason they do well in India. In India, you have to be patient and their safe mechanisms have hard wired that into them. Btw, if you have been following SA cricket since as long as I have you may have noticed they always bat deep. No 9,10 will also be more than decent batsmen - earlier you had the likes of Klusener, Pollock, Boje, Hall coming in at No. 8/9/10 and now there is Morkel, Peterson etc. who are decent bats. It gives you an insight into their thinking - play safe. Not that there's any thing wrong in it but they will never look dominating on the field like a West Indies or Australia. I must mention this is particularly their batting unit and not bowling unit which will give that impression. In some sense, they are the "Italy" of cricket.

i know what you are saying...i myself use to say that south africa win by boring other teams to death..:cantstop: but lately since we are talking about captaincy of smith i have noticed he tends to go for wins a lot more.. south africa batting too is lot more positive those 3 sessions in perth were batting pasterclass almost playing at 6 rpo and counter attacking and winning the game now they also go for smaller lead..earlier they use to give safe targets and now they are willing to defend smaller ones in orde to force result . and about bullying teams well most teams are weaker than top 3.. they will bully rest of 6-7 teams very easily most of times and isnt that what exactly australia did ? ofc they are never gonna dominate like australia cos i dont think there ever will be complete team like it . they had everything greatest fast bowler, spin bowler, openers, wicket keepers, number 3 batsman and classy middle order with so much bench strength .. i think in last 2 years south africa have been lot more positive .. to be very honest this being aggressive in tests is over rated in first place as u cannot really bully good teams and have to fight each and every session and lately i have noticed south arica try to attack and win lot more sessions. that perth game was perfect example if that is not aggressive intent then i dont know what is.. i guess best a captain can do is play team to its strength maybe the way south africa play suits them ? what do u think about that? clearly results away from home suggest that.. :hmmm: i believe this deserves equal credit to being aggressive:--D

It is only very recently that SA have had one or two games where they have forced a result in their favor. They have tried many times and failed too like the 3rd Test match (at SCG?) in Australia 2006 series. In any case, Smith post 2007 is a much more mature captain and has done decent with what he has.

BTW i think team like australia can actually use skipper like smith right now.. aggressive sounds good and all but it does not always work not in test cricket atleast.. als clarke has very bad man managing skills have no doubt now .. will never consider any one good captain until he helps some playersbecome better players and creates a team .. right now his vice captain is probably his biggest enemy:giggle: and 2nd most experienced batsman is out of most important series for them! runs he is scoring is masking these things imo..

I would say Clarke has all the right ideas but all the wrong resources. I can see why Warne likes him. He has same sort of zeal and adventurous outlook. Tactically also is unpredictable. Warne would have been great great captain, setting a new benchmark for the role.
