Wonder if srilanka will rest key players to give them time before finals. Or they might just try to throw india out here or else finals will be a very tough one for them

Remember, India has to win with a big margin to be safe. So that we can get an extra point to be on top of the table to qualify for the finals!! Gonna be an interesting India Vs Sri Lanka match. KOHLI TO DO HIS JOB AGAIN BUT NOW AS A CAPTAIN!!

3 back to back matches for SL including the final. Could mean some of the bowlers especially Mallinga being rested. Not sure if Kohli will like it. As for the calculations for us to go through Scenario 1 : SL bat 1st, we need to win with at least 1 ball remaining to go ahead of WI Scenario: We bat 1st, need to win by at least 2 runs if we score upto 285 and by at least 3 runs if we score 285+ These are for full 50 over matches. Numbers will change if we have a shortened match

A simple excel model tells me so fairly sure. Let me give a few examples. WI NNR is -0.383 India is at -0.52, For 689/139, against 749 /136.4 Scenario 1: SL bat 1st, score 250 a) We score 251 in 50 overs and win on the last ball - For 940/189, against 999/186.4, NRR = -0.3859, more than WI, we go out b) We score 251 in 49.5 overs and win with a ball to spare - For 940/188.5, against 999/186.4, NRR = -0.3727, less than WI, we go through Scenario 2.1: We bat 1st, score 275 in 50 overs a) SL score 274 and lose by 1 run - For 964/189, against 1023/186.4, NRR = -0.3876, more than WI, we go out b) SL score 273, lose by 2 runs - For 964/189, against 1022/186.4, NRR = -0.3823, less than WI, we go through Scenario 2.2: We bat 1st, score 300 in 50 overs a) SL score 298 and lose by 2 runs - For 989/189, against 1047/186.4, NRR = -0.3841, more than WI, we go out b) SL score 297, lose by 3 runs - For 989/189, against 1046/186.4, NRR = -0.3787, less than WI, we go through

Rajneesh Gupta ‏@rgcricket All media reports saying India need a big win or a bonus point are wrong. A win by 1 run or off last ball will put India in final #TriSeries Rajneesh Gupta ‏@rgcricket That is if India are setting /chasing a target under 319.If target is 319+ India need to win by 2 runs or with one ball to spare! #TriSeries

Partly true. See the examples I gave above

Brilliant, thanks.

Mohandas Menon ‏@mohanstatsman 4h #Triseries India to qualify just need to beat Sri Lanka by 1 run or even off the last ball. Then India and Sri Lanka will qualify #IndvsSL
Nakul Kamath ‏@naxical13 4h @mohanstatsman If SL bat first n set target of 180, and Ind chase it in 50 overs, Ind's NRR will be -0.39. Ind will be disqualified.
Mohandas Menon ‏@mohanstatsman @naxical13 If India's target is 180 means SL has made 179 and India chase it in 50 overs, then India's NRR will be -0.374 (WI is -0.383)

Rudradip Biswas ‏@RudradipBiswas 1h @mohanstatsman crcnfo sys if d trgt 4 ind is above 321, jst winning of d lst ball wont do, is it ryt ?
Mohandas Menon ‏@mohanstatsman 1h @RudradipBiswas Yes. India will then equal WI on NRR. All my calculations were based on 300 or less targets

Kapil Choudhary ‏@kapil857 36m .@mohanstatsman However the match needs to be a full 50 ov match. If reduced to 20 ov, Ind need to win by abt 15 runs #IndvsSL #Triseries
Mohandas Menon ‏@mohanstatsman @kapil857 Yes. if 20 over game then by 13 runs or by 13 balls to spare!

Remember 186.4 is 186 overs and 4 balls. So while calculating in Excel we cannot directly use "186.4". It should be 186.667 (Since 4 balls is equivalent to 2/3rd of 1 over = 0.667). So the scenario is a) We score 251 in 50 overs and win on the last ball - For 940/189, against 999/186.667, NRR = -0.378, less than WI, we go through Anything under 320, last ball or 1 run win is enough. Anything >= 320, then 1 ball to spare or 2 run win is enough.
