All rule and playing condition changes have favored the batsmen since Richards' time. Anyhow, for me Dhoni would struggle to make the top 10 ODI batsmen ever, so we are not even in the same ballpark here.

Also new innovations have been made like Reverse Swing and Slower Ball,Slower Bouncer etc... WI batsmen especially post Viv have struggled at ODI format for a while now due to the fact that they go real hard at the ball,Only guys who were adept at playing late Lara,Chanderpaul etc have been succesful.....But yeah still Viv ahead of Dhoni.

Also DHoni hitting 15+ runs against STeyn in IPL is different from him pulling the stunt against him say in Durban even in a T20I game leave alone test match. Forget Durban I bet in an international game of any relevance whatever format it may be,I will bet $500 -real money if Dhoni can pull that off against Steyn....Book mark this and PM me when it happens....Dead seriousl I will pay up

Reverse swing and slower balls were there even in Richards' time, though not as commonly used as today. Factor in much better bowling attacks, livelier pitches, longer boundaries, inferior bats, fielding restrictions and it's pretty obvious which times were easier for batting. I don't see the relevance of WI batsmen having struggled in ODIs. Their bowlers have also struggled, but that has more to do with their inherent quality than anything else.

why hussey ahead of dhoni? both played in the same era and dhoni has the better numbers. rest is fair enough, although most of them are top order guys and dhoni has been a middle/lower order batsman for most of his career.

Hussey is a more versatile batsman as far as the ability to succeed against tougher attacks and conditions. Dhoni is more explosive on flatter pitches than Hussey can be. I rate the first quality higher than the second. Yeah, among the lower middle order batsmen - Symonds, Bevan, Yuvraj, Inzi bhai, Dravid, Hussey, Dhoni, Dhoni is behind Hussey and marginally better than Bevan and clearly better than the rest. However, as much finishers get talked about and are important, the top order is where a lot of matches are won or lost, thus my preference for top order batsmen in general over finishers.

in odis dhoni has done well even on tougher tracks..technique and all is fine but dhoni has actually performed in odis everywhere in world now the argument of tough tracks should come if he failed some where but did not . also in odis u get those tough tracks very rarely, even if u do number 5 or lower batsmen dont have to be technically sound to survive as main bowlers have limited overs .. to me dhoni is def a top finisher and in all time 10 list..

i dont know how much merit the 'flat pitches' argument has in the context of ODIs, where most wickets are generally good for batting. leaving that aside, i think a middle order batsman would earn his paycheck by finishing well, especially in the 2nd innings. i couldn't recall a single significant innings hussey played while chasing. i remember the 18 off ajmal but that was a t20. statsguru uncle gives me 7 fifties in the 2nd innings --> http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/5939.html?class=2;innings_number=2;orderby=batted_score;template=results;type=batting;view=innings and thats on a batting average of 42. pretty uninspiring, especially compared to guys like bevan, for whom i can recall numerous chases. i also doubt hussey ever had to put out the kind of fires that dhoni has had to, like yesterdays for example - his australia werent really prone to the kind of brain farts that u occasionally see from indian batsmen. dhoni on the other hand, has been a seriously good chaser. most, if not all of his memorable innings would be 2nd innings efforts. for that reason alone, i'd take dhoni over hussey any day, since he really earns his money as a chaser. this discussion is pretty pointless though, and your last sentence sums it up perfectly. top order has the more difficult job. you should run that by a few people in the other threads... :winky:

I guess I did overrate Hussey going by my impression of watching him bat and the fact that he looks more secure than Dhoni and still has the ability to unfurl the big shots, but numbers and matches don't seem to back up my impression. So fair enough, that Hussey doesn't deserve to be in my list of batsmen clearly better than Dhoni.
