CG Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Many might have written them off for making a comeback to the Indian team, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan - both were part of India's victorious campaign in ICC World Cup in 2011 - are not leaving any stone unturned for a recall. In an attempt to make their way back, both are reportedly working in France with renowned trainer Tim Exeter, who has got experience to work with the likes of Manchester United's star Ryan Giggs and other top rugby players. In some of the pictures posted by Exeter on his twitter id @MetasportAP, Yuvraj and Zaheer are seen working in the gym, doing weight training and getting involved in roving and beach running. Both the players, along with veteran batsman Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were dropped by the selectors, deciding to give the youngsters a go keeping in mind the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. While Yuvraj, 31, last played for India in an ODI against England in January this year, the 34-year-old Zaheer made his last appearance in the Kolkata Test against England in December 2012. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/cricketnext/yuvraj-singh-and-zaheer-khan-fighting-tooth-and-nail-for-a-comeback/409356-78.html?utm_source=MC_RHS Dropped from the India team earlier this season, Virender Sehwag dropped out of sight after the T20 tournament. But after a break, the body rested and batteries recharged, he is back. Having dusted his kitbag, and bat in hand, Sehwag is ready to hit the nets. The master batsman, a veteran of more than 100 Tests and 250 ODIs, is keen to erase the unpleasant memories of the past few months. In this phase he had issues with his body as various parts complained, and his eyesight needed mending. Worse, his bat lost its magic, form eluded Sehwag and the T20 was nothing but a fruitless search for the big score. During this wretched stretch, Sehwag looked out of sorts, often tentative and scratchy. Not the fluent player we know. As India discovered new openers, Sehwag gifted himself a strategic timeout. Switching off from the game, accompanied by his family, he holidayed in the US, happy to spend time at Disneyland with his kids. Back in Delhi, Sehwag is focused on the more serious task of reconstructing his career. At present, with summer cricket over and arrival of the monsoon, opportunities in India are limited so he is assessing playing options in England. Till that happens, Sehwag is busy persuading his body to get into shape. Every morning, once his kids are off to school, he hits the gym with his personal trainer. Nobody understands the uncertainty of the future more than a sportsperson, and Sehwag is unwilling to think too far ahead or worry about what could happen next. Like a hardened pro he knows how to ride out a tough spell, and the importance of taking it one ball at a time. But talking to him, one thing is clear: he isn’t done yet. Typically, with a brief remark and disarming smile, he provided context to his position. “What else will I do,” he said. “Cricket is the only thing I know.”
vvvslaxman Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Good attitude . Wish you good luck. :two_thumbs_up:
namasteji1 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 WHat about Sehwag and Gambhir? Are they doing anything or eating pakoras and samosas?
vvvslaxman Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 WHat about Sehwag and Gambhir? Are they doing anything or eating pakoras and samosas? I don't recall at any point of time, Viru being athletic. Atleast Gauti could run fast on the outfield.
namasteji1 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Never called them athletic, Viru specially needs to work on his fitness and show that he wants to come back.
SLICKR392 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 WHat about Sehwag and Gambhir? Are they doing anything or eating pakoras and samosas? Gambhir needs to work on his game, not fitness. AFAIK, he has been working hard since being dropped. Haven't heard much from Sehwag.
Sidhoni Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 WHat about Sehwag and Gambhir? Are they doing anything or eating pakoras and samosas? They probably still believe they are the best opening pair since they (used to) average 50+.

veer Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Yeah, noticed this news in last week or two.. It is applaudable the way both are training.. especially Yuvi.. I hope at Zaheer comes back to Tests and Yuvi in ODIs (in place of KKD).. Never liked Veeru's lazy attitude so not very positive about him hitting gym..

GolGappe Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Yuvraj could have used a short stint in county cricket. Physical fitness in France and match fitness in UK.
Muloghonto Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Fitness is not a big concern with Veeru IMO because Veeru should be 1st slip by default in any format he plays currently for India (with the retirement of Dravid, Veeru is #1 slipper in India). He never was fit, mostly stands around in slips and does an above average job at it and that is good enough. We are starting to have a bowling attack that can take a lot of wickets and therefore, we should back our bowlers by making a 1st slip mandatory in 90% of the match scenarios. There you go, Veeru's problem is solved for fitness question. Regarding battnig question, i really hope he gets a county stint. I have no idea how deep the opening pool is in County this year but county cricket will let him rediscover his confidence overseas. The last 4 years have been terrible for Veeru overseas and he needs a big one overseas to regain that confidence. If he gets 10-15 innings in county cricket, he is bound to score a big one.
Crookbond Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Sehwag may not be a good ground fielder but he's as good as a catching option as you will come across. TBF, it is pretty much true of the last generation cricketers - Ganguly, Dravid, Kumble etc. Most of them were not the best of ground fielders but more than decent catching options.
adi B Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 ^agree.they were terrible athletes but their catching was good
Pagalpanti Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Looks like their PR guys r in full-swing, timing also just about right as SA series is not far away.
Muloghonto Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Looks like their PR guys r in full-swing' date=' timing also just about right as SA series is not far away.[/quote'] SA series may be too early. It'd be like throwing the fallen giant to the wolves: Saffers have by far the best attack in home conditions and overall the best attack IMO (all those who think Anderson = Steyn are fools, really) and Sehwag would be in low confidence. The next series by the Kiwis imght be the perfect time to give him a shot at comeback: an easy series and then in England, which he should do okay in assumign he does a county stint this year. Look, this is not about PR, this is about expectations & utility. Not everyone will be a Jonty Rhodes and we dont need 11 Jonty Rhodes. Taylor, aka 'tubbie' was by far one of the least fit guys i've seen playing cricket in terms of athleticism but my God was he the best ever slipper of his generation. Sehwag maynot be as good a slipper but he is still by far the best slipper in India. So i just dont get the idea of whats wrong in keeping him as slip option 90% of the time nad then sending him to third man when we need a third man.

When was the last time Sehwag did not field in the slips in Test? 100% of the time he has been a slip fielder/'slipper', in the past 1 year and is usually in the gully region overseas (Eng/Aus).
panesarv Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 The amount of catches Viru drops is ridiculous. He's always catching a nap in first slip.
suraj Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Will be a great heartwarming story if Yuvi can come back with a vengeance after his illness Zak I highly debate but the guy gave it all in his prime Sehwag- don't care about; he's achieved his max and it was pretty damn good
