Is Champions tropy format better than World Cup?

With too many affiliate nations playing in the league stage, the results become predictable. The test nations only need to beat the weaker side to move into the next stage. Its gives a free pasage and does not test the true potential of a team. Hence I think Champions trophy format is way better and competitive than world cup. Do you guys agree?

agree but at the same time IMO cricket needs to expand its core base. We basically have 9 cricket playing nations. Zimbabwe is still quite a way from recovery. In the past cricket lost key entities like Kenya and East Africa through not protecting the game.

that should be done out of WC with ICC instructing teams to tour these nations regularly.WC is a marquee tournament and focus should only be on entertainment

then how are teams supposed to develop? They need some exposure once in a while. Teams like East Africa rely a lot on local talent. They are not like Ireland who can field a team of expats with some Irish links from England SA and Aus. Their players need to rub shoulders and play againsy the best once in a while. Cricket and Rugby Union as global games find themselves in similar positions. They basically both have 9-10 teams playing at a certain level which can deemed as acceptable. (ie competitive with atleast the limited overs format for cricket and in rugby a competitive scoreline) Both Rugby and cricket WCs have included weaker teams in order to expand. Cricket is not the only sports to do that.

Let them play more test matches. Create 2 test groups: 1) Ind, Pak, SA, Aust, Eng, SL, WI, NZ 2) Ban, Ken, Zimb, Ire, Sco, Nam, Afg With test cricket..they will be able to develop their skills. Playing an ODI worldcup once in 4 years with big boys will not lead them anywhere.

As I said, they can actually if big teams play them regularly home and away on a bilateral basis.playing big teams once every 4 years doesnt really develop them.Which is why we are at a same position where we were 10 yrs ago,Ideally Ireland and Kenya should play a lot more and should have had test status by now.but that hasnt happened

surely the entire aim is to give them more exposure in their respective countries and attract more supporters to cricket? Cricket Ireland for eg as a result of defeating Pakistan in the WC 2007 and England in WC 2011 (when it made national headlines in Ireland for defeating a historic enemy) has increased its total members from 15,000 (mostly made of British expats living in Ireland and south asian communities) to 150,000 today (with many local Irish people partaking). That is a tenfold increase. From a small base. Cricket will always come second to gaeleic games, rugby union, football in ireland but can make significant inroads in the protestant community as their main game. There is nothing stopping you from implementing both. A test system as you mentioned and WC. Maybe what should have happened is that rather than QF-Semi-Final as kubrikan mentioned yesterday it should be Semi-Final. This way even the group stage as meaning as defeating minnows RR is involved.

I dont find it boring in fact i feel the world cup is much better than champions trophy. Its not like only the major teams are going to the second round of the tourney everytime maybe they should change the format to make it more competitive.

this is good for test matches. and then have 2 teams demoted to lower table based on their performance

Austin, something of what you have suggested already exists Test Nations:- Ind, Pak, Aus, Eng, SA, SL, NZ, WI, BD & Zim Inter Continental Trophy:- Ire, Afg, Scot, Neth, Nam, UAE, Ken & Can Making the weaker teams play amongst them is not the solution. Hence we need a bigger World Cup & a World T20. Reducing the nations in World Cup will infact make it boring in long term with same set of teams playing each other in Bi Lateral series then World Cup. The thing ICC needs to do is make the format much more interesting. I suggest 2 formats for World Cup Proposal 1 3 Pools of 5 teams each- Total 15 teams Top 2 teams from each team go into Super 6 Then Direct Finals Total Matches:- 30 + 12 + 1 = 43 Matches All matches would have to be competitive as 2 out of 5 teams would mean competition in group. Then Super 6 would also be interesting If we take today's ranking Groups may look like Group A:- Eng, Pak, WI, Neth, Scot Group B:- SA, SL, BD, Ire, Afg Group C:- Ind, Aus, NZ, Zim, UAE Proposal 2 4 Pools of 4 Teams:- 16 Teams Top 2 teams from each group move into QF, then SF & Finals Total Matches:- 24+7 = 31 Matches In view of Broadcasters would be happy with proposal 1 as it means more matches. While from academic point of view Proposal 2 would be better with a short and sweet WC which finished in under a month

I may be in the minority......but I like the current WC format......it allows teams to get into form.....some matches may prove to be horribly one sided.......but at least the weaker sides get a proper chance in the tourney.....

^ proposal 2 was tried with 4 group.was utter :fail:
It was fail because after round 1, we had super lengthy Super 8, which without Ind, Pak was so many matches without audience. See the proposal again. It is direct QF, SF & Finals it is a hell of a difference.

The 2015 format is not as bad as most ppl seem to be stating. Getting 3 qualifiers out of the scores of national teams vying for those 3 places in such a marquee event is perfectly justified imo. If anyone feels disinterested in the preliminary phase of this tourney they can easily start watching the knock-out games if they so choose and that would be akin to watching the champions trophy all over again. For me, there are enough exciting games in the group phase to keep the interest level up because this is the format where we have seen the most number of upsets historically.... so i would be equally interested in watching us play against Ireland (that would make 4 of the 6 games worth watching for India- the other two maybe in the hope of seeing some records lol) This is a World Cup... what do ppl expect? like 8 teams or we rather make it like a league (super 6,8 etc) instead of a true knock-out competition to test the mettle of these teams

That is the difference of how you perceive and so called minnows will never be a farce. In other games such upsets are welcomed. For Eg When France were knocked out in first round in 2002 WC (They were 98 Champions) when Senegal defeated them and Uruguay drew , there was no talks of format change required, rather these 2 teams were appreciated for knocking out the Champion Here we frown upon BD or Ire defeating Ind or Pak, despite the fact after 2007 also these teams again defeated as so called big team England and if given a chance they might be able to defeat 2 teams in 2015. This attitude will in the end limit cricket to Probably Ind, Aus, Eng & SA in the end. This must change.
