Somerset eye up deal for Chawla

Somerset have agreed terms with Indian legspinner Piyush Chawla with a view to him joining the club for the rest of the season. The BCCI have provided the requisite No Objection Certificate but Chawla has yet to gain the necessary visa. Somerset are understood to have contingency plans should the visa issue further delay Chawla's arrival. They were hoping to have him available for the next County Championship game which starts on August 20 at Edgbaston. Somerset, who were second in the Championship in 2012, are currently up to their necks in relegation trouble. With five games left, they currently sit seventh in the Division One table, eight points ahead of Surrey, in eighth, but having played a game more. Surrey have just strengthened their squad for the rest of the season with the signing of prolific South African batsman Hashim Amla. Somerset had originally signed Pakistan left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman, who played for them with success in 2012, but he was obliged to pull out of the deal when he was named in the Pakistan squad to play Zimbabwe. 24-year-old Chawla played the last of his three Tests, against England in Nagpur, in December. He has previously represented Sussex in county cricket in 2009, where he took 36 wickets at 27.25.

Chawla did well in County Cricket at Sussex a few seasons ago. Goes to show our players are in demand if the BCCI is willing.

Demand for Indian players will always be there. They bring in the crowds. There is a big Indian population in the UK. I hope Hampshire sign somebody. I can pop in at the Rose bowl (or Ageas bowl as its currently known)

and let me put it this way. If BCCI gave NOC's for Friend life t20 for Indian players. The entire county league would be packed with Indian players. No county is going to miss the commercial chance. Especially not london based counties like Essex Surrey Kent and Middlesex.

GB, don't the ECB have plans of a different schedule for FLT20 from next season? Read somewhere they want to play the tournament all through the season with matches only on weekends. How will that impact counties which sign players only for FLt20?

But that have done that because they want to have many T20 games as possible on a friday evening more than just weekends to get more crowds in. Ie they can earn more through the summer and have a longer T20 campaign. What happened at Yorkshire for eg this season was they were hammered early season and people did not turn up in numbers for the remaining matches. This way i spreading it out there is more interest. What will happen is that the counties will have a series of overseas T20 only players playing 1-2 matches. So say Hampshire will sign 4-5 T20 players during the course of the campaign and pay them on a per match basis. I think they have done that so counties can sign big international players. As of now in June/July the traditional T20 season many big names are off to play international cricket.

While all the focus has been on Gauti's stint at Essex, Chawla too has landed at Somerset and is playing the ongoing Championship match vs Warwickshire. Not a very good outing so far scored 18 runs and went for 77 runs without a wicket.

188 to win now in about 50 overs the conditions in Edgebaston are pro spin. Chawla really needs to step up with the ball and make an impact with Dockrell.. he has contributed well with the bat.
