Mariyam Posted August 27, 2014 Author Posted August 27, 2014 Saptapadi Jewelers, a small time Mumbai based group, have the following ad in the print media and also on hoardings and buses. A photo of a lady in bridal finery and the caption. " I didn't get to choose my husband, at least I chose my jewelry" In very poor taste, me thinks. What is the point that the ad is trying to convey? Subservience? Choice of jewelery can off set having no say in choosing a life partner?

Mariyam Posted August 27, 2014 Author Posted August 27, 2014 What's racial in that? And isn't that the truth as well? Nothing racist. Its just demeaning to women. The "read between the lines" message is women should thank God for small mercies.Something on the lines of: At least you women are allowed to choose the comparatively insignifcant things in life. For all the important decisions, you're incapable of thought and hence have your elders/ relatives/mahrams.

Racist no. and how do you know her mother (another woman) did not chose the husband? Maybe its an ageist thing. Whereby a young person is not capable of making the right choices? I find in India many young people (men and women) have marriage choices made by them by their elders.

I didn't think this one instance warranted a new thread, hence posted it here. I'm not denying anything you said. Its just that why position your ad in that way? I mean could they make your regular " Saptapadi makes you glitter and shine even in a blackhole" kind of an ornament ad. Why chose something like this which is controversial, albeit subtly. As an analogy, what if a British gun making company were to pitch their wares to the GoI and they caption their prime gun with " From the makers of the guns that got you the Jallian walah... " This, IMO, is kind of on those lines.

(assuming the sentiment is strong) They have attempted to be funny. Its not worked out. In mumbai especially where women are increasingly more independent. Especially in the middle classes.
rkt.india Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 They have attempted to be funny. Its not worked out. . It looks more satirical.
gaurav92 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 It was meant to be funny, but was complete fail on part of the advertiser :giggle:
G_B_ Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 It looks more satirical. satire is a type of humor..... the likes of unreal times and faking news are satire.

It is a regressive ad...just like that new ad which shows the woman boss husband go home and make an elaborate dinner for her subordinate husband. This ad got a lot of publicity...may be the jeweler was also looking for some negative publicity. Or considering that bridal jewelery itself is not such a progressive buy....they actually mean it. It is also a sad reality for many women and men.We do have rather regressive traditions and too much power and importance given to 'elders'.
G_B_ Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 It was meant to be funny' date=' but was complete fail on part of the advertiser :giggle:[/quote'] lets hope they did not pay an advertising agency for it. :cantstop:
rkt.india Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 satire is a type of humor..... the likes of unreal times and faking news are satire. and to it looks like an attempt of humor at such practices prevalent in society where 99% girls do not have much say in choosing who will they marry.

Raghav_12 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 and to it looks like an attempt of humor at such practices prevalent in society where 99% girls do not have much say in choosing who will they marry. There are lot of cases where such thing happens but 99% is way over the top and not representative on Indian society of 2014.

You are right, it is downright sexist.

CSK Fan Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 What's regressive in that ad? There has been huge debates on social media with both sides One side is that the ad is a positive one about a woman being a boss and able to surprise her husband and spread love On the flip side people are saying that the woman still has to perform a cooking role to justify herself Personally I go with the first view, I did not understand what was regressive about the ad

Agree totally. :two_thumbs_up:
CG Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 What's regressive in that ad? True i thought it was about love.
