http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/cricket/jonathan-trott-flies-home-crickets-2851412 Four more players who suffered Sadly Jonathan Trott is only the latest in a long line of England cricketers to have suffered mental health issues linked to the rigours of touring. Phil Tufnell: The famously chirpy captain on TV quiz show Question of Sport spent a night on a psychiatric ward in Perth on the 1994-5 Ashes tour. Graham Thorpe: With his marriage disintegrating and soon to become a public soap opera, became another tormented tour refugee when he flew home from India in 2001. Marcus Trescothick: Now the ‘poster boy’ for cricketers forced to manage depression, Tresco was evacuated from Australia on the 2006-7 Ashes trip and never played for England again. Michael Yardy: Stressed to breaking point by the sleeplessness and psychological torture of spending only four days at home with his wife and kids in five months, bailed out of the World Cup in 2011. Interesting lot more English players than other country. I know Tait. is there anyone from other coutnries/ Any new zealanders?
we are missing one more gun player who took break in the middle of the tour.. Ravi Bopara during saffer tour of england

I know that very well. Test cricket is fun to watch. I have watched the first test of the current Ashes myself. What I don't like is some nobody comes and tells that ODIs and T20s are meaningless. These people just don't understand that there are people who enjoy watching ODIs' date=' T20s and IPL too. Just because these oldies were born when nobody knew how to hit a 6 does not mean everybody has to watch that same thing.[/quote'] No one said ODIs are meaningless just 7 in a series is meaningless, also too many T20 matches, cut down on them.

Big respect for folks like SRT, Dhoni, Virat who breathe in and out pressure. If we are deifing Trotty, let us ban from this forum things like "mentally weak" to describe technical shortcomings, because apparently "mentally weak" is a psychological "illness"... Oh dear, the political correctness

Aren't most of what you mentioned are type of stresses one can face in life?
I m speaking about different causes for mental illness. Stress is just one of the cause. My point is, Trott's condition cant be said as "chickened out" or "scared of MJ" or "stress caused by non-performance" etc., The possiblilites are huge. sorry for the boring lecture though :cantstop:

True.. Ganguly is still described as "chickening out" despite claiming an injury for Nagpuar test. Whenever DHoni doesn't come up the order in a random match he is called a chicken :cantstop:

This is from an interview to Cricinfo dated Nov 4 http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013-14/content/story/685569.html

"I got myself out a few times and first Test at Trent Bridge I got a weird review. I'm still scratching my head about that," Trott said. "I technically had a few flaws which I have hopefully ironed out. Over the course of a summer - we started in February in New Zealand and ended in September - it's a long time, so a few things probably crept in that I didn't want to happen. It was to do with balance and it wasn't what I normally do. "So it was a little bit out, but in an Ashes series you don't want to tinker too much and be too specific on your cricket because the games come thick and fast. Little things creeping in and a lot of little things create a big thing. I wouldn't say I had a huge problem, I was thereabouts but I was probably finding my balance and technique wasn't there, because if you want to go on and get really big hundreds you want to be balanced and have everything in working order. I was getting out in ways I'm not accustomed to because of slight things I wasn't doing all the time."
This is from just a few days back (during the warmup match) in which he made a 80 odd http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013-14/content/story/688481.html
"Everyone has got a few runs, and is feeling good about the game. But you're not going to know exactly what nick you're in until you're in front of 40 or 50,000 people at Brisbane. It's more about getting prepared mentally for that, being ready for the challenge and a tight-knit unit. Everything seems to be coming together at the right time.
Doesn't sound like someone who was battling clinical depression enough to chicken.. err.. drop out from the most important series in the calendar and return home to me. And a big **** you to the chap who's wishing death for guys who have tried to call a spade one...

Rewrite Darwin's Evolution Theory, replace "adaptability" to "mental stress illness". Dinosaurs died out due to mental stress illness caused by "aggression" from other species. Pakistan didn't chicken out against India in the wars and World Cups. They were haunted by selective stress illness. Poor Pakistanis. A captain of a sinking ship who abandons it before passengers is not chickening out, he is merely affected by "Stress illness" and shouldn't be judged for it.

That's precisely my point. I have been there too. Any self respecting cricketer, that too one with the calibre of Trott would not fake mental illness and get out of a tour jeopardizing his career. His career as an England test player may be over for all we know. Maybe his lack of form was because he a was struggling with it for a while now and this was the last straw that broke the camel's back. He could not take it anymore. To equate mental illness to be mentally weak is such an ignorant statement and I am talking from personal experience and experiences from around me. Mike Wallace was one of the toughest journalist that ever was and he suffered from chronic depression all his life. He had to take meds continuously to fight it. Mental illness is no different that heart disease, arthritis, etc. Would people doubt his departure if he was suffering from cancer, or had a heart attack?
get a grip. Cancer is identifiable, diagnosible and physically inspectable. Its part of perfect science. Depression on the other hand is not a perfect science diagnosis. The symptoms aren't universal. The magnitude cannot be objectively verified. Heck, even diagnosis could be flawed. I underwent treatment for "acute clinical depression" for 2 years. Was given medication by some of the top psychologists. Did it work? Not really. Different doctors, different medicines, but same diagnosis - Clinical depression. Finally I grew up, grew a pair, and understood I had to tackle it. I was running away from the problems instead of facing it. Just decided to do what normal people do, live and struggle it out. I completely stopped my medicines, and came out of the situation in less than 6 months. Of course a job helped as well. Take ownership and face it head on. And not chicken behind excuses

:WTF: Are you for real? These are some of the most idiotic analogies ever made on ICF

It certainly appears to be an english problem. One of my very close friends (he is white british) did go through a phase when he suffered from this. Sad for me that i was not around there to help him out to the extent i could. He is now coping well by creating daily routines. But even small things can set him of. His gf was telling me that if he does not watch the Simpsons at 6pm you can sense a shift in his mood. Its a disease. Plain and simple. I realise that a person can potentially make it up (like say whiplash and in accident to claim false car insurance money). But you have to consider this Why would Trott make it up? (A) He gets paid around £750,000 a year to be a fully contracted player of England in ODIs and Tests. His county salary is about £125,000 (assuming he decided to quit internationals and stay at home). Why would you try to fake something and take such a huge drop in salary? That is one hell of a pay cut. Why take such a chance with your career? Its not as if the rest of the english batting covered themselves in glory. Odds are even after a **** tour he would still be in the side. He is 32 (which is not young) and odds are this will probably end his career. (B) Regardless of what johnson did, Trott's average has been a relative free fall for the last 2 odd years in the Test matches. He has just not had a good time v a variety of opposition.

and as per our experts on ICF If Trott was mentally weak and not 100% he should tough it out and (A) Get a series of low scores putting further burden on his team. (B) Put his long term health in jeopardy

This much i know. In USA it is overdiagnosed and overtreated.
Same all over west. Why someone of work " stress or depression" !! Ridculous feeble excuse used so commonly in work place, as impossible for a doctor to accuratley diaognise and dissprove. I mean how does a doctor say someone does not have stress and is faking it, impsoosible to diagniose either way with certainty Not talking Trott here. But anyone with one hour research could fake stress and get signed off by a doctor
