Lord of the rings has more depth to it since it is actually based on the three books whereas the hobbit has been made by dividing a single book in three parts so somehow I feel that the scenes in LOTR have a solid base, you know? I was really looking forward to the making of the Silmarillion but Christopher Tolkien refuses to give rights. WHYY :((

The story of The Hobbit would have fit well in 2 movies so it does look like some scenes are forced. Anyway, LOTR movies are in a class of their own - hardly any Fantasy movie matches up to them. Christopher Tolkien hated the LOTR and Hobbit movies and has said that he won't give the rights for The Silmarillion to Peter Jackson. Doesn't mean that he won't give it someone else so I'm sure soon it will be made into a series of movies, only with a different director.
