Lurker Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 The best time of the year is with us. The season of the myriad of festivals that happen only in India. Was talking to my parents this morning and I could detect the excitment in their voice, thanks due to the fact that the Pandal erected right at our doorsteps was opened for viewers to see the Maa Durga statues(today is the 7th day or Saptami of the 10 day festivities, and typically on this day teh curtains are opened). I rate this as best time of the year for the sheer range of celebration. In Northern India you have people observing Navratri, same in Gujrat/Mumbai area. In Mysore it is Dusshera celebration while in many parts of the country(specially Northern India) this is the time when that lovely ancient(and now dyeing) art of Ramleela is performed, ending with Ravan Vadh on Vijayadashmi. The best part however is Durga Puja celebrated east of UP, specially in UP/Bihar/Bengal. This is one of the bestest things Bengalis ever gave to India. For folks who have not witnessed it do take a trip Eastwards at this time to see what India truly is. Far away from the Bombay-Poona 6 lane highway and Bangalore Hi-Tech City. It is the India where parents haul kids on their shoulders and walk them from Pandal to Pandal. This is the time when teenagers would line up to watch dames. This is the time when every single tailor in town is booked. And within a few weeks Diwali would be here too!! Happy Durga Puja and seasons greetings everyone. :rose: xxx
coffee_rules Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 It is Dasara Festival (Habba) in Mysore. The Dasara parade in Mysore is very famous for it's grandeur. Seasons' Greeting to all!

sandtest Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Ya Devi Sarvabhootesu, Chitenya Roopen Bhidiyate.... Namastasyai, Namastasyai, Namstasyai,Namo Namah!! (Durga Saptashati) (Salutations to great Goddess, who abides in all "beings" as the form of Infinite Consciousness. We Bow to you again and again) Navratri ki Shubhkamnaaye.
sandtest Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 What I miss is those "Ram-Leela"-- the stage performance of Ramayana stories. In UP, people celebrate Dussera in big way....I once participated in local Ram-Leela as a character in Vanari-Sena :haha:
Bongosamaj Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 If there is anywhere on planet i'd be for Durga Puja, it is Kolkata- the Mecca of Durga and her bhaktas. A grand celebration too- maybe next year i will be there for the puja time.
