bulbul Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 During last searies in OZ where SA won series 1-0 , OZ bowling was pretty good compared to SA, onlt in the last test SA bowled better and OZ bowling faltered which gave series to SA. I can remember 2 sessions [1 each OZ & SA] where batsmen went berserk , RR @7 for whole session.

Marut Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 RSA have more strength due to consistency. Johnson is yet to prove that he can continue his dream form from tour to tour. Harris is injured half the time. Same thing with Watson, if he bowls a lot he may get injured. Other newbies like Pattinson and Cummins also appear injury prone.
gaurav92 Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Steyn Morkel and Phil are good, but Johnson adds some variety with his angle being a left arm bowler. Its a tough one, but I'd go with the Aussie attack for their discipline and constant interrogation around the off stump channel, although Steyn on song is better than any other bowler in the list.

Yeah our bowling may be better(up for debate), but the Saffers batting card contains modern legends and gritty Faf du Plessis who is a rock. How the top order performs against Steyn, Morkel, and Philander will decide the series for me.

Smith Petersen Amla ABdV Faf du Plessis de Kock McLaren/Harmer Philander Steyn Morkel Abbott/Hendricks Batting till 8, and a 5 bowler attack too.

Best SA lineup is Smith Petersen Amla de Villiers van Zyl - Depending on FC season but they haven't played since mid Dec JP has to be in, bowls handy spin and bats well against Australia, just out of touch atm Faffers Peterson Philander Steyn Morkal So really going by attack I think Australia have a more complete attack with Lyon but I don't know about better, they are really closer than people think.

Ryan Harris is a damn good bowler. But Siddle is nothing special and there are at least 10 better spinners than Lyon in International Cricket right now. Australians have collectively bowled very well against England but this attack is not as lethal as RSA. The good thing is we will find out in couple of months when Australia tours RSA

When it comes to intimidating Australia is making a name for themselves thanks to Johnson. Where SA has the edge is their ability to roll over a side in a matter of 10 overs. Australia hasn't quiet reached that level yet. Before you blink your team would be all out against them.

Why van Zyl? Besides, Peterson's performance against us flattered him - he isn't even 50% of the bowler that Lyon is. The lineup you suggest will heavily depend on Steyn and Phiander - one of the two has a bad game, and this lineup can't take 20 wickets. Kallis picked up 4 wickets in the first Test, although Morkel wasn't around. Your lineup doesn't have a dependable 5th bowler. JP's avg is 33 after 21 Tests. Robbie's avg is 29 after 14 Tests. Besides, Robbie is a better spinner than Duminy. Unless SA unearth an all-rounder of the calibre of Kallis, Pollock, or even McMillan, they should play a 5 bowler attack with 2-3 bowlers who can bat or are moderate all-rounders.

I don't deny that I did suggest a couple of unorthodox names. I suggested de Kock because ABdV cannot do so many things indefinitely, and de Kock can become a good allrounder (bats and keeps) if he really is as good as his FC stats. But, in the attack that I suggested, I'd replace McLaren/Harmer with Robbie. However, Harmer is one for the future - good record on SA pitches and can bat too
