Viv was good but he is a bit overrated. Viv was deserving of 'greatest player of pace' tag for the first 5-6 years of his career. Then he was pretty ordinary. Viv was what Sehwag would've been if India had 8 worldclass fast bowlers to choose from and knew that if anyone dared to bounce him repeatedly, their bowlers would kill the opposition batsmen in retaliation.

But until the last couple of years, Sehwag was never truely mediocre for extended periods of time. Viv was a mediocre batsman being shown up by the likes of Richardson for almost the last decade of his career. But then again, you probably didnt watch Viv either. Interestingly, they both were epic failures in New Zealand and have nearly the same record in Australia. Viv never played in South Africa, so we shall never know. Yes, Viv was far better in English conditions but thats not really a fair comparison, given that Viv averaged 10 or so FC matches for Glamorgan every year for almost ten years, so England was as much 'home' condition for him as West Indies was, if not more.

IVA Richards from 1982 to 1991: 76 matches, 4569 runs @ 43.93, 11x100s, 29x50s. Average of 43+ vs the Aussies, 45+ vs English, 40+ vs India 43+ vs NZ and 50+ vs Pakistan. Zero calendar years of 1000+ runs, best year of runs: 1988, 867 runs from 17 dismissals @ 51.00, best year of average: 1985: 310 runs from 5 dismissals @ 62.00. 5 years of averaging below 40. Whichever way you look at it- either from seeing Richards live or through stats, Richards was pretty mediocre at tests for the last decade of his career. Like Sehwag, he was a reflex player of sound but technical limitations. Sehwag does not do too well against the 'inswinging semi-bouncer' directed at his chest, Richards had problems with balls pitching fast & full through his last decade. Like Sehwag, Richards could destoy an attack at an astonishing rate, well and truely ahead of his peers in strike rate & doing it repeatedly. And like Sehwag, Richards gave zero merit to your name- whether is McGrath or Lillee, their bad balls were smashed just hard as if they were from a club cricketer when they erred.

Average of 43 in any age bar those of the early 1900s is mediocre. It isnt exactly poor but it is also distinctly middle of the pack performance. Incase you forgot, the likes of Border, Miandad, Gooch,Lloyd, to name a few, all averaged above 50 in the same time period as Richard's decade of mediocrity. Batsmen who averaged more than Richards and played a significant amount, IE, say atleast 50 innings in the 1980s, who averaged more than Richards are Richardson, Miandad, Crowe, Gooch, Border, Gavaskar, Gower, Greenidge, Vengsarkar, Dean Jones, Azharuddin, Amarnath,Imran Khan, Mark Taylor, Shoaib Mohammed and Robin Smith. Thats barely cracking the top 20. Which is, as i said, mediocre. Richards was medicore for most of the 80s and the last decade of his career. he was stunning in his first 6-7 years but that is one thing Sehwag has over Richards- Sehwag never spent anywhere close to a decade being so-so. Most of who have seen Sehwag would have no hesitation picking him in their AT XI on balanced pitches or pitches that favor the batsmen either. Yes, Richards was better than Sehwag, but its closer than you make it out to be.
