We used to have optional practice sessions since Gary Kirsten and yes, seniors. Remember Australia tour and go carting. Weren't seniors there? Originally, It was Dhoni who brought this trend and Kirsten agreed to his suggestions. Seniors also followed him. Dhoni never believed in too much nets during a series. His focus was more rest and switching away from cricket when not on ground. Regarding seniors, yes, their work ethic was good but that approach worked with them as they did not need much practice unless and until they were out of from. SRT never used to practice too hard before a series. He would just have a few throw downs to have feel of the ball on the bat, but when he was not in the nick or out of form, he used to put hard yards. Gavaskar said the same thing on Aus tour in 2012 about Indian team's practice sessions being optional. It is the youngsters who need practice to hone their skills and that Dhoni's approach which worked with seniors wont work with youngsters. Sachin and the seniors NEVER sacrificed their practice and work ethics and daily practice even if go carting etc was held to relax. Youngsters should emulate that. If Kohli will copy Dhoni, I'm afraid he won't have a bright future!

No, there were optional practice sessions when they did not practice. Same thing is going on now. I have already posted articles form past. It was started under Gary and continued under Fletcher. As I already said, they would usually practice hard when they were struggling and in poor form. Regarding Kohli, he is just a stop-gap. He is not Indian captain yet. We will see once he becomes full fledged captain.

Anshuman Gaekwad, Madan Lal echo Sunil Gavaskar’s sentiments on India’s work ethics After Sunil Gavaskar came down heavily on the beleaguered Indian players, questioning their “abysmal work ethic” following the side’s defeat to arch-rivals Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup 2014, former coaches Madan Lal and Anshuman Gaekwad too have lambasted the Indian team for it’s poor work ethics. Madan Lal stressed the importance of having good work ethic for a team to succeed. “This chalta hai sort of attitude is hurting Team India badly. It is important to have a proper work ethic and discipline in the team”, he told the Mid Day. “I don’t know whether we should blame the captain, coach or the team management. You either have a practice session or you don’t have it. Simple,” said Lal, who coached India from September 1996 to October 1997. Gavaskar, talking to NDTV after India’s loss to Pakistan, said: “India’s work ethic has been pretty abysmal. It has let the team down. They have not practiced well and there can be nothing like optional practice. There was no excuse for anyone apart from Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli to miss practice. “This business of optional practice has to be thrown out of the window. This is not the case only in this tournament, but throughout. You are not here to be in your hotel rooms or to be out in the shops. You are here to represent India, something which the team management has not been saying for the past two-three years.” To add to Gavaskar’s sentiment, Lal said, “I don’t think the Indian team enjoy their training sessions like other teams. As a result, India’s last group-league match, against Afghanistan, on Wednesday, has been rendered inconsequential. However, with just a single win in the tournament so far, the Virat Kohli-led team would definitely be on guard to avoid any further embarrassment. Though India’s losses against Sri Lanka and Pakistan were close affairs which could have gone either way, they have been facing flak from almost all quarters. The most scathing attack, perhaps, came from former India captain Sunil Gavaskar who questioned the Indian players’ work ethic. But middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu has spoken on behalf of his teammates and has said that some of the Indian players have “mental fatigue” as they have been living out of a suitcase for the past several months. “We have been travelling… From South Africa to New Zealand and then coming here (Bangladesh). We played a game just two days after landing here from New Zealand. So the players have mental fatigue as well,” Rayudu said after the practice session, on Tuesday. Gavaskar, who slammed the Indians for their “abysmal work ethic”, had questioned the logic of having optional practice sessions. He was referring to the team’s pre-Pakistan match practice session where only two players — Cheteshwar Pujara and Varun Aaron — had turned up. But Rayudu argued that there was no dearth of intensity in training. He reasoned that the team was hard-pressed with the hectic scheduling as some of the members of the side, including stand-in captain Kohli, have been playing non-stop cricket since the home series against West Indies in November last year. “We have been working as hard as the other teams if not more. Moreover, we have been playing back-to-back games. We played three games in five days. It is not only about us… No teams have practised after back-to-back games.” “If you look at the pattern of the games, I think all the teams have struggled in the middle overs because the wicket is slower. There were wickets falling quickly, so we needed to consolidate and at the end of the innings. But the matches have gone till the last ball. It is not that we are not able to score or anything like that… It’s the same with all the teams,” Rayudu explained.
