The Indian cricket team's run of poor form has prompted former captain Sunil Gavaskar to come down heavily on the beleaguered players, questioning their "abysmal work ethic" following the side's defeat to arch-rivals Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup. India suffered a nerve-wracking one-wicket defeat at the hands of Pakistan in Mirpur last night, which virtually put them out of contention from reaching the final of the five-nation tournament. India have lost two matches so far while winning the one against Bangladesh. "India's work ethic has been pretty abysmal. It has let the team down. They have not practised well and there can nothing be something like optional practice. There was no excuse for anyone apart from Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli to miss practice," Gavaskar said. Gavaskar also lashed out at the top order, saying that the batsmen were over-confident and failed in shot-selection. "India threw away a couple of wickets unnecessarily and every time Pakistan have been asked to chase 250 recently, they have failed. So, we were a few runs short," said the former skipper. He also said that it was very easy for the batsmen to hit sixes at the Sher-e-Bangla cricket stadium, as the boundaries were shorter. "The boundaries should be a bit longer. Sixes were hit easily on this stadium." Gavaskar, however, defended stand-in-skipper Kohli and said that he has shown promise. "For somebody who is captaining for the first time in a major tournament, Kohli has done well and shown promise. Losses to both Sri Lanka and Pakistan were suffered in the last over," he pointed out.

So it is duty of ex-cricketers like you to guide the younger generation of Indian cricketers. It is always easy to criticize from commentators ac rooms. We the general public wants more contributions from the gavaskars, shastris, arun lals and kapildevs.

rajmarie Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Why only Kohli & Dhawan allowed to not practice as per Gavaskar. Why cant someone like Shami not have a break also. IMO Shami should be taken care of & should be BCCI top priority seeing how we don't have any decent quick bowler (or for that matter any bowler). Shami in the only one that looks decent at times & he cant be in every Indian XI.

CG Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Gavaskar has said the same thing many times.Dhoni has made practice sessions optional and most do not turn up on last away tours we did not get practice as we did not turn up for practice before the sa test while sa were practising and then the next day it rained and we had to go indoors.In 0-8 losses we were go karting and sight seeing while aussie were practising .There needs to be change in coach and captain permanently to change the culture.

Dhoni is not even there for the tournament.

Dhoni is not even there for the tournament. You cannot change attitude and training methods in few days.It would take total overhaul of the setup.Kohli is stopgap.

Same happened under Gary with seniors and that same thing is going on now when we have youngsters now. It had become a trend in Indian team now, Dhoni in team or not. Only practice can make these youngsters better. Why guys like Rahane or Rayudu needed rest or DK?
