Batsman Pujara turns to bowling in nets for ODI selection

Its sad more than anything. Our best bat in List A has to work on his bowling to get a chance in the playing XI.
LIST A doesn't count......For LOI performances,I will respect IPL stats more than List A....atleast in IPL for every Vinay and Unadkat, there is a Steyn and Malinga

You guys are not getting the point.......Pujara deserves a run in the ODI side.......I am saying he is showing desperation by bowling Legspin etc as mentioned in the OP which means he wants to be in the LOI side by any means.....Pujara is not the most agile fielders as well which also has worked against him. I commented on his desperation rather than the fact he is well deserving or not. Forget more or less established LOI palyers liek Raina/Rohit...even vijay,D.K and Y.pathan probably make more money then him...Sad but true
he was bought by RCB for $700,000 a year on a 3 year contract. I dont know how much of that came his way as he was injured but i am pretty sure at least half of that must have been in his pocket. That is not a small sum. He is currently bought by Kings 11 for a decent sum as well. Not bad for a batsman who has yet to show much in the format.

Agree but that is peanuts compared to what Raina,Rohit,Kohli,D.K,Rahane,Dhawan,Yusuf etc make. Even though he has accomplished much more than most of these names mentioned at the test level. The only way for him to make an impact is by performing in ODI's....even Kohli wasn't a great T20 player in the first few IPL seasons or at the international level, but his ODI exploits has given him a different level of confidence.

Rahane made nothing for the 3 years and will make 1 million USD a year after proving himself at the Rajasthan royals with two solid seasons. Prior to that he was a domestic ranji cricketer making $60,000 in the IPL cause he had not debuted for India before the auctions took place. I mean why compare Pujara to his Indian peers. Somebody like Chandila probably made more impact than Pujara in the IPL and was paid $30,000. Point is. You cant have a level playing field. The best way Pujara can increase his dough is not by bowling leg spin but by batting well for his franchise. Its a moot point he wants to bowl spin cause he is not being paid much. Pujara bats well for kings 11 next year they will bump him upto 1 million USD. Realistically he is in competition with Rahane and Rahane is not a part time bowler. He is however a much better fielder than Pujara. So if I was che maybe rather than the bowling its time to improve the fielding (batting aside)

Rahane's failure in ODI's will not mean an autmoatic opening for Pujara....There is an assumption that Pujara bats slowly which right or wrong cannot be denied. Rahanes failure will infact open up a slot for players with a big hitting reputation like Raina,Yuvraj or even a wildcard like Yusuf-all 3 of them who can bowl decent part-time. SO Pujara will be competing with them rather than being an automatic next in line,so while I don't endorse what he is doing,I can understand where he is coming from.

There would be plenty of FTB T20 hitters who would struggle to build an innings in an ODI on a tricky pitch against decent bowlers. Pujara's List-A stats show that he can build an innings and puts a price on his wicket. His Test match performances show that he can compete with the best of bowlers with ease. If you combine both these factors you would realize that we have a readymade ODI batsman waiting in the wings. Yes, he should also try to be as good a fielder as he can be.

The world cups are going to be played in Australia and England in 2015 and 2019 respectively. If they were in the sub then even Rahane would not have got a look in and Che would not be in the squad

Once again I will say he deserves a ODI slot....I'm just trying to reason that him trying bowling is not as over the top as it looks.

Overrides happen all the time...do you think our captain, coach or selectors have displayed any long term vision....Pujara should be in the starting line up in 2015,based on that he should have been given a chance to settle in on the flat tracks of Bangladesh but that didn't happen did it. Mark my words Rahane and Rohit are next on the chopping block and I will bet these 2 scenarios either one of them will be replaced by the names I mentioned or Pujara will not be given a long enough rope. I guess both scenarios are a safe bet.

It's not a correct assumption @ Pujara bats slowly. In 2013, in Tests, Pujara's SR was higher than even Kohli. Check out some of his knocks in the 2012-2013 Challenger Trophy (India's highest level List-A cricket) http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-domestic-2012/engine/match/574138.html More runs and higher SR than Dhawan and Uthappa http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-domestic-2012/engine/match/574139.html Not as fast but carried the bat once again http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-domestic-2012/engine/match/574140.html Again close to 100 SR.

Saurav this myth was broken down on ICF many times but selectors don't go by stats, they go by reputation. Even though Pujara has the stats he unfortunately doesnt have the reputation

But in this case, it is not about the selectors, it is about the team management. The selectors surely want him to play, but the wise team management has other ideas. :winky:

This shows how much he wants to be a part of the ODI squad. For that reason alone I'd take him in the squad rather than playing players who take their spot for granted. We already know that he has the capability.
+++++ players like rohit who believe that whatever they do they will be picked, like what Gavaskar said. How the F is rohit undroppable yet pujara not able to be picked? Highest list A average HELLO?! :orderorder: When a specialist bat has to resort to bowling to get picked its a bad sign. GG never had to bowl, neither did other batsmen. We need some allrounders but when you have jadeja and ashwin and mishra as spinners, and then someone to fill in overs why need another batsman to bowl?

rahane has already done more than rohit in the limited chances he has got, rohit is a failure. we have better cricketers waiting. Pujara should be at 4 imo, room for him and rahane. Dhawan, rahane, kohli, pujara, rayudu/tiwary/jadhav/good striker, Dhoni, Jaddu, bowlers

atm rayudu over rahane in odis clearly......as much as I think rayudu is not a long term option he has done ok in the chances he has got...he deserves a little longer.
