The Realist Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Jonathan Trott must accept team-mates and opponents will feel he did a runner I feel conned that we were told he had a stress-related illness when really he left Australia for cricket reasons I feel a little bit conned we were told Jonathan Trott’s problems in Australia were a stress-related illness he had suffered for years. We were allowed to believe he was struggling with a serious mental health issue and treated him with sensitivity and sympathy. He was obviously not in a great place but he was struggling for cricketing reasons and not mental, and there is a massive difference. There is a danger we are starting to use stress-related illness and depression too quickly as tags for players under pressure. In his interview with Sky Sports he then completely disrespected anybody who has gone through depression and mental illness by using words such as “nutcase†or “crazyâ€. We have all said things we regret in the media but I find it staggering he is so ill-informed that he used those words. I have no doubt he was going through hard times in Australia but as professional sportsmen playing in a high-profile, intense series such as the Ashes against good opposition you are going to endure stress when your form goes. It is part of the job. What Trott will have to accept is that players in his own dressing room and in the opposition will look at him and think at the toughest of times he did a runner. He did not fight and got on a plane and went home. It is harsh but that is the reality. It was wrong for him to brush it off and say England’s match against Scotland in May would be a good time to return. Nobody has a given right to get back in the side. It is the England cricket team and he walked out. If he had stayed in Australia he would have been dropped. Gollum Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 What a coward and deserter? It is times like this when I really admire Indian cricketers. They face so much pressure from media and fans but they don't do what Trott/Swann did.(except maybe Harbhajan)

A long of other guys would have shown foolish courage, hung around, continued to play all matches, performed poorly and still said - I am doing fine. Lots of Indian cricketers continue to do the same.

Lots of Indian cricketers continue to do the same. better would have been to retire .If u are able to overcome odds u become better player also.

I don't think any cricketer retires midway in his career just because he has a bad patch. You will hardly overcome any odds if you are not in the right frame physically and mentally. He would have only occupied a spot unjustly, if he was not in a shape to fight. Many cricketers selfishly occupy spots in national teams, keep trying overcoming odds and make the nation and its fans suffer. Not everyone has the guts to own up that he is not in the shape to fight that night.

Nothing great about it..

No....Then he should have been in the squad and dropped himself,but then that would mean bringing attention to his form and inability to handle the Aussie pace attack or whatever he was scared of.....Making up a serious issue and running away is not the right thing to do.

No..he would not have occupied the spot unjustly because he would've been dropped had his horrendous form continued..its England we are talking about..not India, SL or Pak Trott took the cowards way out..he lied to his team-mates & left them cold.. Trott would never again gain the respects of his team-mates even if he finds his way back to the team. & Can anyone trusts him again in the future if he looses his form that he wont desert them again like he did before ?

IMO almost as bad as match fixing. In hindsight it was pretty convenient for Trott to be going into depression after England was getting exposed after a long time.

What's funny was that Swann was in the commentary box for the recent WI v Eng series and was utterly shameless.
