That chennai test scorecard says it all , only three batsmen reached double figures and that third one being Dravid who scored exactly 10 runs. Not even Bradman can win match without any help. scoring 270 is big deal for two batsmen on any pitch forget on wearing turner. Indian batting simply could not handle the pressure which was proved again and again in later years.

Other than Mongia other Indian batsmen simply could not handle the pressure.Very unfair to blame Sachin on that issue.

Game over India.[/quote'] Wrong Tendulkar was trying to hit Saqlain out of the park and skied it instead, Wasim took the catch at cover. Wrong again, Lara was dropped by Healy. It would have been an easy catch for Warne who was standing at first slip, Healy tried to take it himself and dropped it.

Both of them gave a chance at the end, Lara was lucky that his catch was dropped and Tendulkar's one was taken. The world would obviously rate the winner higher but some of us who watched them live know that they were of same quality.

Had Tendulkar not gotten out, even if he had not added a single run to the tally (say Joshi swung his bat, hit a few sixes and the game is over), then his innings would undoubtedly be ranked in the top 10 innings ever played. As i noted in the comparison above, the only difference in circumstances of Lara and Tendulkar's innings was that Laras was at marginally tougher conditions ( moderately pace friendly conditions facing 3 awesome pacers as opposed to genuinely spinner friendly conditions facing one amazing spinner and two competent ones) and most importantly, the opposition spilled his catch in the closing minutes of the game. This one act- that the opposition dropped a dolly off of Lara in the last minutes of the chase while they did not for Tendulkar- being of such import that it is the difference between #1 and #100, is inexplicable and points to a system that is significantly flawed. I see your point. But cricket is not as simple as it appears, imo. Lara may have created enough tension for the Australians to develop nerves or mentally given up. While a cramping Tendulkar may have made Pak feel that it had a chance and thus be more alert. The catch offered by Tendulkar was as simple as it gets. In fact there was no reason to play such a shot at that point, which may have gone against that inning. Another point to note is that Lara was majestic in that series. If I m not wrong, he had even hit a double 100 to win WI the 2nd test. While Tendulkar, iirc, faded in the rest of the series.

However when talking about chances/getting out - apart from the shot he played when Ind only needed 17 - Sachin was let off by Moin (stumping) as well. Sachin on 90, Ind 160/5, @4:17. The questions pops up - If Sachin were stumped, would his innings be rated the same as it is after 46 more runs? As I said, in cricket things are not as easy as they appear.
